DUDE last week i had your exact same problem with the weird videos and stuff.
I only know your solution if you have an nVIDIA graphics card, however, which is downloading this:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.89.html
This sorts out all the hardware problems that cause the videos to mess up like they did for me.

ur ddoing it wrong, u dont have to unplug it at all! try the audio tab and the others to see if tehres more options that tell the system what sound 2 use and make sure they are all set to ur soundcard not USB soundcard
