The pope Benoît XVI appeared with faithful to the Place St-Pierre on April 19, 2005 not very front 19h00, the evening of his election. Joseph Ratzinger was born on April 16, 1927 in Marktl amndt Inn, in the diocese of Passau (Germany), of a father, senior police officer, resulting from an old family of farmers of Low Bavaria. From 1969, he becomes dogmatic professor of theology and history of the dogmas at the university of Ratisbon and vice-president of the same university. Already in 1962, at the 35 years age, he is a consultor with the council the Vatican II, of the archbishop of Cologne, the cardinal Joseph Frings. On March 24, 1977, Paul VI appoints it archbishop of Munich and Freising, first priest diocesan to assume after 80 years the pastoral government of the great Bavarian diocese. He is created cardinal by Paul VI with the consistory of June 27, 1977. On November 25, 1981, Jean-Paul II calls it in Rome and appoints it Préfet of the Congregation for the Doctrines of the Faith. He is also a President of the pontifical Biblical Commission and the international pontifical Theological Commission. He is in addition a rapporteur with the 5th General meeting of the Synod of the bishops in 1980 on the topic of the Christian family, and deputy President of VIème Assemblée synodal in 1983 on the reconciliation and penitence. On November 6, 1998, it is elected vice-senior of the college of the cardinals. President of the Commission on the preparation of the Catechism of the catholic church of 1986 to 1992, it presents after six years of work at Jean-Paul II new Catechism. He is named by Jean-Paul II Senior of the College of the cardinals on November 30, 2002, succeeding the Cardinal Bernadin Gantin. Among its many publications, a particular place can be made in Christian Foi yesterday and today, collection of university lessons on the apostolic profession of faith, published in 1968; with Dogme and Revelation, an anthology of reflexions and preachings dedicated to pastoral, in 1973. A full echo was also given to its plea pronounced in front of the Bavarian catholic academy on the topic: “Why am I still in the church? ”, in which it affirmed: “only in the church, it is possible to be Christian and not at side”. In 1985, appears Entretien volume on the faith and, in 1996, Salt of the earth.
