Political quotes

Many men and women have said a lot of interesting things over time, so I ask you to post your favorite quotes concerning politics.
(I'm hoping to get some good qutes here, so people, pay some effort! :P)

So I go first with 2 quotes:

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with an average voter."
-Winston Churchill- (Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945)

The people should not be afraid of their governments, the governments should be afraid of their people.
-actually a movie quote, but I just like it a lot-

yes it is

"It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong."
- Voltaire

"Whoever does not miss the Soviet Union has no heart. Whoever wants it back has no brain." Vladimir Putin

Thats kind of a rip off of the good ole Chancellor Bismark who said: "He who is not a socialist at 19, has no heart. He who is still a socialist at 30, has no brain."

And since there seem to be so many Churchill lovers here here's a good quote by him: "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

But my man Ike also had a point when he said: "Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

Lets take something more philosophical by the ever-so-high-on-drugs Huxley: "Unless we choose to decentralize and to use applied science, not as the end to which human beings are to be made the means, but as the means to producing a race of free individuals, we have only two alternatives to choose from: either a number of national, militarized totalitarianisms, having as their root the terror of the atomic bomb and as their consequence the destruction of civilization (or, if the warfare is limited, the perpetuation of militarism); or else one supra-national totalitarianism, called into existence by the social chaos resulting from rapid technological progress in general and the atomic revolution in particular, and developing, under the need for efficiency and stability, into the welfare-tyranny of Utopia."

And to finish it off I'll introduce you to an ignored but deserving philosopher, Celia Green who said: "It is actually a principle of modern paternalism that if you want something you should be stopped from having it[…] Most foods are harmful to some people if taken in excess, and I expect the only reason that carrots are still available without a prescription is that no one has got very excited about them, or claimed that they might cure cancer."

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

-George W. "God speaks through me" Bush

Haha, I remember seeing that clip! Awesome ;D

I have to say I actually like some quotes from V for Vendetta, since its politicly oriented movie.

I concur with that. The movie has a lot more to it than a cool mask, explosions and weapons. It is a very deep movie with a lot of political statements about the government and the law.

As far as quotes go, I'd like to share this one:

"There will be no end to the troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands." ~ Plato

"Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events."

- Sir Winston Churchill

"I hear there's rumors on the internets."

- George W. Bush

"If there is person, there is problem. No person. No problem"

Good ol' Stalin

he also said other stuff such as "One death is a tragedy, one million is a statistic."

A President's hardest task is not to do what is right, but to know what is right.
-Lyndon B. Johnson-

The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.
-Lyndon B. Johnson-

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
-Albert Einstein-

this one has a somewhat political touch to it, so I thought you people might like it like I do :)

"Our preparations are well." - Per Albin Hansson (Swedish Prime Minister during 1936-46)

Our prepareations are well, what a joke.

"This is my home, no one can kick me out"
Yasser Arafat

"either Victory or Martyrdom"
Abu Jihad

Ncls, thanks for that quote, it helped me get my A in my History coursework :D

you're welcome mate :)

'He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.'

'you don't give freedom, you take it'

"the death of one man is a tragedy. the death of millions is a statistic."
- joseph stalin

one of those sad truths.

Adolf Hitler (comparing himself with British prime minister Neville Chamberlain): "Mr. Chamberlain likes to take weekends in the country; I shall take countries in the weekend!"

Adolf Hitler: "The Jews are definitely a race, but they are not human."

Sir Winston Churchill

(i like russians ;p)

“During the years of my presidency I lived a tough and difficult life ... I tried to be honest and fair, helped the talented and those in need,”- Alexander Lukashenko

what a great man *sniff*

"Never before the fate of so many hasn`t depended on the bravery of so few"

said by Churchill during the battle for England in 1940 about the English pilots

"For myself, I am an optimist — it does not seem to be much use being anything else"

again by Churchill

"The laws are like the frankfurters - you better don`t see how they are being made" :D
