NVIDIA cards are currently the better choice, especially the new 8800GT is a nobrainer since it's so cheap yet a great card. Hell, you can get two of them and run them on SLI for cheaper than a single 8800GTX pretty much :) ~$200 per card.

I've got geforce8800, my buddy's got atix1950pro and everything looks the same... Perhaps you would find some small differences if you had the computers by itself. The only difference (and the only one that matter) is performance, so pick graphic card according to that.

But ATI Radeon is recommended by many semi-professional/professional computer users which i have met or know. They say that it has a better performance and is better for games.
Well, since I'm not totally into hardware, here is a nice site which goes deep in detail about GeForce vs ATI Radeon, so check it out :).
