A lot of pros use 640 because when the game first came out, only 640 was available. Pros don't like to change settings and prefer consistency, so they never changed it. Lots of pros use 800x600 and lots use 1024x768. Pick what you like.

640, with Large Crosshair, its amazing (for me)

i have been playing 800x600 with small crosshair for 3 years. then months ago i changed to 640x480 with large crosshair, i can definitely say that i "feel" the game much better and my aim improved too. just a personal experience.

They play at 640x480 because when they started playing CS there weren't any powerful CPU's like we have now. So 640 was the obvious choice to get 100fps :)
