WC3L = WPL now ? no !
- How has the best league in the world become boring and impossible to follow the past three seasons ?
- What should have done the WC3L ?
- Why and where did they fail to react ?
My 10 propositions, as a wc3 fan.
#1 - Give the line-ups 48 hours before the game.
The past seasons proved that great teams can bring poor games thanks to the mass mirror effect. Waiting for a game and finding out you're going to watch soccer vs Sase, Fivestar vs MinHyuk and Kei vs Rainbow (just an example) can be rather disappointing.
The starcraft proleague gives line-up of the upcoming games for a complete week every sunday. That's great to prepare yourself for a nice Boxer vs Stork 4 days later, not going to stay home if the emperor doesn't play right.
#2 - Fix the f*cking WTV
Or you know what, just stop using that crap. It's even more frustrating to start watching a game, knowing you "might" get dropped out anytime than not watching at all. Worst thing with WTV being that I haven't seen a complete game with it in ages.
#3 - ESL TV + Octoshape = love
I'm not asking for a TV show, I'm not asking for wireless microphones with Intel processors in the crowd, I just want a stream of the game. 1 guy, 1 computer, cost = 0 (ok bandwidth). If the guy streaming his computer speaks english, that's even better, let him shoutcast the game. All the big games involving top teams should have a minimum alternate streaming service if WTV fails (it fails.)
#4 - Where is the ESL ?
It seems the ESL is moving fast, Extreme Masters are growing, sponsors are responding well to the leading gaming structure in germany, but is the WC3L getting any profits from it ? I don't know. It seems that the whole season runs completely in silence, with no interests from anybody until the BIG FINALS. But the ESL needs to find a way to make the regular season more interesting. Invite teams to play in Koln, Stockholm or Berlin, make interviews, make videos, make features, make news, create content, create hype, attract the freakin audience ?
#5 - Where is Baschi ?
Maybe this is the reason why WC3L is losing it a bit lately, Baschi seems to be busy busy busy with great responsibilities (and great power). Perhaps he had to delegate too much of his wc3l-baby and we remain, helpless fans of an orphan league.
#6 - Shake up the Website
Come on, ESL has had 3 different websites since the WC3L moved in, time to give some times of your developers to the Warcrafters don't you think ? The biggest wc3 league in the world deserves a modern website, modern statistics. Just imagine it's www.nba.com, would people have so much interests in the basket-ball games if coverage there was so poor ?
#7 - Start on time or tell us what is going on
If a game is set to start at 4Pm, None should wait 50 minutes refreshing waaagh!tv, which will eventually disconnect anyway. There should be a better way to keep us informed of the running clan-wars. Right now MYM is doing live-feed during WC3L games, that's nice, maybe the WC3L could handle something like that too.
#8 - Bring in new maps !
You don't need to wait for Blizzard to do it. MBC and OGN are key leaders of the map pools changes in S.Korea. The WC3L should get in touch with decent mappers to run a new map-pool every season (3 maps stay, 3 maps out and so on). "What if a map is imbalance". Well it's still better than the current TS TR TM TS TR TM. (and GW for OvO).
#9 - A fixed match of the week playtime ?
I know this one would be hard to set up but, perhaps every week, the same day same time should be the match of the week. The big "rendez-vous" for all the warcraft 3 lovers. No need to double-check time or place, it would be a regular weekly gaming night.
#10 - WC3L league 2
Prepare the future ! Maybe the SC2L will soon take over but right now, your core market is playing wc3. Open a second rank league with granted slots for the League 1. This would avoid the boring qualifier (ok interesting with the asians lately) and give more animations all along the regular season.

#1 - good idea actually.
#2 - WC3L got nothing to do with WTV
#3 - ESL TV got many other games going on, but yeah, they could use it way more often for WC3L.
#4 - yep.
#5 - dkdrc
#6 - wc3l site is ok imo.
#7 - wc3l got a limited amount of staff
#8 - ok.
#9 - good idea
#10 - there are ngl2/tgl/wcip for clans on this level. There is no need for WC3L 2 imho.

Okay as an admin, I will comment on this.
#1 - if we give out the lineups 48 hours before the cw then the teams cannot have last minute changes and u will see FF here and there. No one knows the future =D
#2 - WTV is a bit bad recently but there are other means like GGTV that is as good.
#6 - Trying to get it done.
#7 - We always start on time. It's a matter of host problems etc. No host is prefect for everyone.
#8 - We are testing the new maps. It may or may not be out depending on the upcoming patch too.
#9 - Too hard to do that. The players don't only play in WC3L. They have their WCG, ESWC, NGL etc. to take care of or practice for.
#10 - We will basically become NGL/NGL2 by accepting teams that are not on that level. Also, manpower is a problem for us.
Side Note - Please volunteer yourself for hosting if you have good internet =D. Helps a lot!!
Thanks a lot for your comments Sabian.

#9 sounds good imo and should be possible, i think everyone can adjust his schedule to play wc3l during a certain day, or give 2 options or 3, but not totally random, just like #4, more offline action besides finals would be awesome... how hard can it be to let world elite play vs mym offline in asia for instance? would be awesome, or mouz vs we etc, or even....european teams in euro , agree it attracts way more

#2 - Fix the f*cking WTV
#7 - Start on time or tell us what is going on
Agree 110% There's absolutely no excuse for #7 and #2 has been ridiculous for a long time, but getting worse lately as you said. One i'd like to add, is stop fucking with the map paths all the time, though this is more aimed at NGL and Asian tournaments so not really relevant here i guess.

#1 - Give the line-ups 48 hours before the game.
There are both pros and cons to it: it might give players more time to prepare for that match up; creating specific strategies against their opponents, but it takes the skill to instantly react to your opponent.
#2 - Fix the f*cking WTV
We are working on it, but the software does not belong to the WC3L nor ESL.
#3 - ESL TV + Octoshape = love
ESL TV does not have the staff size to cover a clanwar in German and English. Right now, they even have problems to cover one match per playday. However, we already realized that this is an issue and we are working on that, also.
#4 - Where is the ESL ?
Saying that main season does not pull any audience is completely wrong - I cannot tell you the specific numbers, but our news for a clanwar is is clicked closed to 10k times - let alone news of other gaming websites, GGTV/WTV/Shoutcast, etc.
Concerning the offline events: you seem to forget that it does not only cost money to set up such offline events, but there is also a quality standard for all ESL events. Next to the German EPS we will have troubles to execute such events.
#5 - Where is Baschi ?
Baschi is still the supervisor for the WC3L. Every big decisions are discussed with him. Shawn and I are taking care of the league fulltime.
But that whole statement is solely your opinion, I suppose.
#6 - Shake up the Website
We are working on it.
#7 - Start on time or tell us what is going on
The WC3L staff is more concerned about actually starting the clanwar rather than informing the audience about the reasons for the delay.
If you really need a live-feed, visit the mentioned website.
#8 - Bring in new maps !
We are working on it. A new map will be announced with the quali grid. More is planned for next season.
#9 - A fixed match of the week playtime ?
We are already discussing this issue, it will also help to solve the ESL.TV problems.
#10 - WC3L league 2
Checked the WCIP before? They get two spots for the upcoming qualifiers...

I think the main problem are the organization and information : you never know if you are going to be able to watch the clanwar, which match and at what time. For me it's almost impossible to follow a whole clanwar live...

Most of your propositions seems to be the result of frustration and I think you setting the standard to high.. but all in all these should be goals that the WC3L admins should consider and eventually strive for =)
#2 Yes, I also dislike the unstable WTV, but the program is not made by WC3L. All though, I guess WC3L has some responsibility covering their event for the audience..
#8 Nowadays we see tournaments experminenting with new tour systems, like where the viewers can vote to revive players or like RotK where the teams had special cards to affect the match. This spices up the games a bit. Now with the new addition of Ancient Isle, hopefully the new trend will be to regularly create new maps.
