What is your view on religion?

We all have different views on religions because there are so many different one's.
Some are brought up to believe in God and some other Buddha and so on. Some other choose to believe later in life.
I however never got brought up in any way of believing or hope in another person than my own family and myself.

So I may have judging comments towards for example christians, I respect all people who have their own beliefs and stuff, but when it comes to my view the bible is just a nice good book written by a good author with no name. True they've find old scripts and stuff, but not many spoke the language of the scripts and to translate it they may have written things they assume was correct, because it is not 100%. In my study of psychology many people tend to always add on things when they tell a story, and then add a new thing when they tell it again to a new person. It is just automatically how we tell stories. It is not a lie, but just something you say to make it more interesting for the person listening to you.

What about you?

The bible is made up for many books but together by different authors and there is many sources that show that many people mentioned in the actually existed. Im not religious myself but i know loads of people believe in the stuff thats in it because they have faith in what it says and look for what is symbolic about what is being said, they dont always think that everything in the scriptures is word for word truth. Like there are two stories in Genesis that tell of the creation of the universe differently and people look for what is the meaning about what is being said, like that Christians were created with responbility or something. My input. :p

The biggest business crap ever created. Respect to the guys who took LSD and wrote the bible. They've sold millions of their books, created wars, killed millions of people. All because of something that never happened and will never be.

religion has shaped the majority of countries we live in today in good and bad ways. A good point is that an old grandma on her death bed can think thats there is more to come in her live that what has happened, it gives people hope.

Hey queen, I agree with you. I am in second genration without religion. Truth, respect, love etc. are my religion. I like nice religious stories, no matter from what belief, if they fascinate people and make sense and have a message of peace and love, why not.

Saint Sir Thomas More in 1522 said: Think about your death. If you would die tomorrow, did you live a good life without sin? Always remember death, every day. Because if you remember, you will do nobody harm and do more good. Because you don't wanna die and end up in hell, do you? (something like that he said)... More was beheaded btw.

And he is right, you don't want to be remembered as a bad person, do you? And that's also true if you do not believe in hell. Hell is only a metaphoric way to describe what you should feel about being a bad person. That's how I translate religion for me. I don't believe in hell but I understand the metaphoric meaning. Like that I can learn something from the humanist More.

I also like to state it the other way round: do good things, and good things will happen to you! (My name is Earl, Karma!) :D... And I respect religious people... no matter what their belief might be. As a psychologist you know that nobody has the same religion. Because every man, every brain is different. So one person can never really belong to a group. You are in a group, but still you are not one with everybody else. Never. And that is good, it's good to be an individual, always. Like that, everything can evolve. On and on. Forever. Until this world explodes one day or freezes because our sun cooled down before.

I think religion through time has been a way of controlling people. The way of ruling a nation followed by its 'divine' favor, like God gave them the right to. Later on and as democracy came in, its been justified as a more spiritual thing, as people are free to choose if they wanna believe or not. I won't go into saying if its good or not, but religion has also been the base of most of 'western' culture. Also been the responsable of many crimes, so it had its pros and cons, like everything.
At the moment, the modern thought is not to believe, cuz its 'old', and having faith in something you can't touch is rather stupid in our materialist '08 society. Thats my view at least.

Old fashioned... belongs to the times when the older people could tell the youngers whats right and whats wrong and what to believe in.
There is just no reason why there should be something like a god.
On the other hand it's good for people to get some moral values. But it seems as if even that wouldn't be enough to keep bad educated people who believe in religion away from crime or unmoral things. This group, which is usually the one "causing problems", even seems to rate the "good" things of religion lower than other values they connect with it.
That's something what seems to apply to some young muslim immigrants in germany who think that using violence for defending their "honor terms", what they often connect with the koran, would be necessary. But lots try to adapt to the western culture and stop doing so. So it religion doesn't look too good for me.

i think that anyone who analyses religion rationaly and objectively will come to the conclusion that none of the religions can be true and that there is no rational reason whatsoever to believe in anything like that, so i am an atheist.

i also think it is very wrong to indoctrinate children to believe a certain religion because most people do not question the basic moral and religious values they have learned as children and will keep believing that religion until they die.

Personally I believe everyone needs something to believe, but they shouldn't try and pressure others to believe in there beliefs. I have no quarms with people who believe in Jesus Christ turning water into whine or that Mary had a baby to a Ghost. Just don't push your luck trying to convince me that this is true =).

I believe that everything has a structure but then the structure of that structure must have a structure and we could go on for infinity, at the end of the day no one knows, so just enjoy life and its experiences.

Also, when you think of someones birthday would you not say it makes more sense for the kids to give presents to there parents for bringing them into the world ? Christmas, religions greatest asset to make kids believe in religion just so they get presents !

I think the only reason religion works for people is because it gives them comfort that what they do and believe in is the right way of life.

this debate can go on for ever...it doesn't really matter which religion you think is true as long you can stand for it and devote yourselfe to it.God is a word, but a word which carries a great meaning.it would be plain cretin to say GOD does not exist...you just don't believe in Him.:)

Buddhism is not a religion, it is a way of life.
I'm a christian, but sadly I don't believe in the Church. My reasons? The church has the most richest country in the world, and it doesn't do anything else just that cover-up the religion's truth just as the predictions of the three kids that saw the Virgin Mary. And more problems religion-related that the church wouldn't even help, even believe after telling them to help. Of course, when possessing becomes real they must relate it to some sickness. God bless them. That's my point of view.

I couldn't agree more, I saw i video recently with a child preaching & the parents telling everyone how it was that the child was a true child of god, which is utter crap because for a child to have an understanding of religion & the concept behind it, it would need to be taught it. I hate adults brainwashing their kids with such shit.

You can neither prove nor disprove that God does or does not exist, to then say that someone is a cretin for saying he does not exist is ludicrous, its as bad as the believer telling the non believer he is wrong, neither can prove other wise, so no one is wrong.

I was raised a Catholic, but experience has taught me that the whole thing is utter bollocks. in one breath it says "love everyone" the next it says "fuck you already been married once, ya cant get married again!" not to mention the fact that depending on whoever is the current pope/leader depends on how things are viewed & how the rules get changed. Take Druidism, it was once excepted by the Catholic church, but one day someone decided it no longer was, so if it really was the work of god then how was it allowed once but then changed? it wasn't, one person decided on a rule change. King's of England have also had the "rules" changed on numerous occasions to suit their needs.

All religions are the same, mostly they are nothing like what they was originally intended, i can pick holes in most religions. The Mormons, base their belief on what ONE person says? i mean wtf, how can so many people be so naive. Muslims, have no one leader to tell them how to interpret their religious scripture, so its open to interpretation & leads to people making the religion fit their current need/lifestyle. It's all crap.

People beleive in religion because they have to have hope, a hope that by some divine miracle that everything happens for a reason, that when they do wrong they can be forgiven, if not buy fellow mankind by a higher being, after all that makes it ok does it not?

Religion is a fallacy for people too weak minded to make life work for them & to see that even though sometimes its shit, sometimes its good & that we dont actually need a reason for anything, life just is, well life.

Religion is a human first attempt at explaining our world and our universe. A plethora of theories and research postulated and conducted in the name of science, no more than a hundred years ago, are laughed at in todays modern world.

I'm not gullible enough to take bad five thousand year old science at its word.

But I'm not arrogant enough to refute every possibility. The fact of the matter is we're only just now beginning to understand the universe and our place in it. Just take a look at quantum physics for example, I can't say with any degree of certainty that I understand the universe and refuse to make decisions based on information that does not yet exist.

I'm an itheist, I live my life as I see fit and apply the science we do possess to my life in a practical manner. If Yahweh, the Muslim, Christian, Jewish God of Abraham really existed then I would refuse to serve him unless it directly benefited me.

But I'm well aware of how impractical the afore mentioned God is. God is not an answer to the questions I, and many others, have about our existance and our universe. That particular puzzle piece doesn't fit and I won't ever apply until it does, which again, is highly improbable.
There are 2 options imo.

1. You believe that we are made by something/someone.
2. You believe we came out of nowhere. In other words there was nothing and all of sudden there is someting.
