Melodeath is clearly In Flames & Soilwork. Only two bands worth really mentioning in the entire category.
As for rock, there are loads of decent bands these days but sadly most people force them into the "emo" genre and then just jump on the "I HATE THEM" bandwagon without listening to their music.
