I'm not a huge comic fan at all actually, i just picked up the Gaiman one because i'm a fan of his. I like some of the plot ideas - Age of Apocolypse sounds like a really awesome arc - but they seem so in-accessible to a beginner. I used to read a few as a kid but i felt like i'd never know the stories and characters properly unless i was born 50 years ago.
That and i have an obsessive/addictive personality so it would probably be very very bad for me to get into them properly ;D~

I know what you mean about the accessibleness, as with most comics plots run into multible comics nowadays. Series like civil war and world war hulk stand on their own and don't require alot of background knowledge, which would probably be better for someone without much knowledge of past plots and characters.
