Your view on the thumbs?
(talking about the thumbs up/down function on the new site)
i think theyre useless
i mean its a nice attempt to immitate youtube or whatever, but to be honest i dont really care what you or anyone else thinks of someone's comments.. i have my own opinion you know
and if a comment or post is really exceptionally offensive or against whatever rule, it can be deleted by the admins anyway
so what do we need this for?

to raise your ego :D
They are a way for the community to emphasize their support towards a specific comment or in the contrary to try and shut down one that is either irrelevant, unnecessary or rude. It is a great way to filter the quality out of the thousands of posts out there. The system isn't perfect but yet again there is no such thing as a perfect one. And keeping in mind that the concept is still in beta and is being tweaked, I'm sure that in the end it will come out great. I like it.
and after the abuse of the thumbs down is decreasing day by day, i think that it isn't the worst system.
"They are a way for the community to emphasize their support towards a specific comment"
thats exactly whats the problem with it: 90% of the people are dumb, so i dont need their shitty opinions rule over the comments
i dont give a shit about the support of the community, if a post isnt against whatever rules, i want to read it
and do you really think theres people that only read like +5 or +10 posts? dont think so
theres only people who read only +0 posts, and theres only a minority of -0 posts in every thread anyway, now if we take away those -0 posts that got thumbed down by retarded kids, it leaves us with only very few real -0 posts per thread
so there we have 2 possible ways for a post being -0:
1) its an unpopular opinion
2) it is offensive / breaking the rules
in the first case i dont need dumb users thumbing down whatever they dont like, because, dont you realize (well no you probably dont, since your dumb), that this undermines the freedom of speech?
you like the majority forcing their opinion on minorities?
and in the 2nd case the admins can do the job as well, as already said

nice one displaying your stupidity as usual swat
the thing is, there is a reason for a thumbs system
but it only makes sense on sites like youtube
why? because youtube is so huge that its almost impossible to control everything there with admins (at least not with reliable ones)
schroet.com isnt so big that admins arent enough to do the job
so the thumbs end up being a useless popularity contest, and, especially since the majority of the users on this website is around 16 years old, i really dont care for that
id rather have a "report" button for admins instead
but then of course it depends on who those admins are.... cause if it ends up like the last 1-2 years on the previous site, where dumb fucking retarded admin kids kept deleting whatever they liked, and just ruining the forums by that, well in that case id even prefer the shitty thumbs... but only then

also im pretty sure that this system leads to many people rather thumbing down whatever post instead of replying to it (also negatively) explaining what exactly their problem is with it
it's something to describe your forum activity being positive or negative.
from what I have seen, people are utterly ignorant when it comes to using thumbs. eventhough you post a negative comment that shouldnt make it worth thumbing down. I for one have read dozens of negative comments, most of them have had good points actually, yet they recieve massive thumbing down. a negative comment does NOT equal to thumbing down, however, stupid users cant comprehend this.
nicknamessuck said it well: "in the first case i dont need dumb users thumbing down whatever they dont like, because, dont you realize (well no you probably dont, since your dumb), that this undermines the freedom of speech?"

i agree, but there are always some ppl who are abusing or thumbing down normal comments
They are getting banned from voting and there votes are reset :)
I think it's a nice filter for spam and useless posts.

YES!
But not if there is no control over it
But not if there is no control over it
I dont have anything against them.
cyberworld is all about pupularity ranks anyway :s
thumb = dumb
HEHE
HEHE
They're cool. Though all this thing about popularity ranking kinda' sicks me.
It's a good idea in my opinion as long as the system is not "heavily" abused. I'm thinking of people who would give a thumb down for personal reasons.
why is it good?
i still havent heard a reason what we actually need this for

maybe is it to flame silly post ?
when some comment get -1 tumb, it appear hidden on the forum, so if u make a topic about cs jump engine, and you see replys like "lol, stupid question".... please, -1 tumb!
just a feature to get an better raking ?
i dont really see the point in them.
Its makes you feel good hh
While the system may need some tweaking, as I don't know the specifics, I do think it's a good idea and will work in the longterm. The people who abuse the system are usually rather dumb/childish and will be picked out of the loop sooner or later for their own stupidity.
Maybe bds should consider coding it, so that when a user has a bad ratio of thumbs given (a lot more negative than positive), his thumbs would get canceled and his thumbs giving function disabled. This would ensure that either you don't do anything with your thumbs or you equally give both thumbs up and thumbs down.
Maybe a big fan of the old forums or some other extreme flamer will be offended, but if I see something completely off topic / useless / offensive, I'll give him a thumbs down for sure. I'm fine with people not agreeing on everything, or presenting a negative opinion on something etc, but when the way you present your opinion is immature and offensive, not to mention unnecessary and uncalled for, I find the "thumbs down" a good function.
I was just talking about this with my friend today. If you see a thread that doesn't interest you, why do you have to go and start whining how pointless the thread is? Why not just ignore it if you think it's so stupid.
However, I do think it might be a good idea to add a setting to your profile where you can choose if you want to see all the comments (whatever their thumb status is) or abide by the standard setting (comments with minus thumbs are hidden). This would make it easier for those who want to read all the comments whatever their content is.

well the only thing you just did is describing why this system is not that bad
but you still havent given any real reason why we actually need it... apart from half a sentence about immature or offensive posts - and as i already said, those can be removed by admins as well if its really necessary
as i also said, theres only one reason why admins couldnt do the job: if the site was too big.. and well, the sk site isnt (whatever bds' ambitions are)
such a system for me only makes sense on a real huge website like youtube

plus youtube has the advantage that it only hides comments lower than -5 by default, and you can still read them all with 1 click if you want to
Ideally it would make things a lot easier for admins since the community would basically do it themselves, but you are right about the site - a few admins can still pretty much keep in touch with everything and delete the offensive stuff. However, I'm not all that convinced that the admins would do a much better job of "managing the content" than the thumbs system :)
Besides, with your attitude a lot of the stuff on this site isn't needed. It's called evolution, something that I think the old site definitely needed. Both of us already listed a few good valid improvements that would make the overall system better, no need for the whole system to disappear.
