done and done! gimme some gossip bds!
esports community used to be ahead of internet trends. Since 2004 they are slow to adopt new trends, this industry needs a proper shakeup.
Unfortunately with all the noise/spam twitter is becoming less useful without proper filtering tech.

The gaming community used to be earlier adopters, you could look at the gaming community and from it see which technologies would see mainstream adoption at a later point. The big venture capital backed VO-IP push came from ventrillo and other ingame voice chat as they demonstrated the technology. Communities like sogamed and other gaming websites where the front runners to social websites like friendster and facebook.
How ever the esport communities where slow to capitialize on online video (use them on their websites) and use features such as social bookmarking (stumbleupon, digg, etc..). I created a thread on twitter over a year ago, and was surprised so few reacted. http://www.sk-gaming.com/forum/19-Software/1077067-Twitter
To be honest I expected the esport community to pick up on twitter quicker as it was pretty self-evident to what the value would/could be for esport. bye bye IRC for foillowing matches. Scores should be broadcasted on twitter (and some are)etc... Speaking of scores, how about an adobe air based interface to follow games scores from ESL or other tournaments. etc... Things could be so nice and easy. How ever I still find it a great pain in the ass to follow esports, so much so that I practically dont anymore. As far as I am concerned proffessional esport as a product is severly broken. Too much fragmentation. I long for 2003 when CS galvanized all the focus and interest, even if it was not my favorite esport game. At least it was easy to follow. The community failed to build upon 2003 and started to push other games like fifa, need for speed, and world in conflict (thanks ESL for that cluster F**K). Offcourse WOW was a great distraction which also created havok amongst the community, as people could not resist the temptation of the MMO.
2009 and Steam still does not have any esport component, there seems to be 0 cooperation between Valve and the vested esport community.Steam is the perfect plattform to have an esport section which allows one to follow the competitve CS scene. As an outsider I dont really see how Blizzard can manage to muster up support and Vavle seems to do so little in comparison. I am under the impression that the esport community fails to realize that the real competiton is not other games or consoles. The real competition is other forms of entertainment, casual gaming, other computer games, poker, music, film, other sports (soccer, formula 1). As these industries have finally understood the potential of the internet they have muscled their way back-into youth culture, pushing esport back to the fringe. In 2001-2003 you could visit a school in Ger/NL and esport (CS) was a main topic amoung the male 14-16 year old. Most where involved one way or the other, esport had the stranglehold on that target group. How ever now-a-days that stranglehold is gone, and esport is just another form of entertainment, but it is not a lifestyle anymore. We are back to late 90´s era as far as the importance of esport is with the youth culture. I blame lost of focus, by all involved. I dont expect esport to regain the dominance it once had, how ever I am quite shocked at the current state in which it is in.South Korea and China being the exception, as their Warcraft/Starcraft scenes seem to be in a healthier state. Then again they did not try to build up multiple games as an esport title at the same time.
dang..... valid points
but not everybody views following esports hard, since there are many tools to keep people in the loop.. i guess its a matter of interest ;)

We were definitely early adopters. Sites I developed like GeekBoys, XSReality, SoGamed all had features that the major social networks now use. The problem with being early with these kinds of technologies is that someone will later come backed with VC and steal the ideas and with the amount of money be able to develop it further. Another fact is that networks like Facebook and Twitter are not niched like eSports, we will never grow like they do, it's not the intention either.
I have been on Twitter for more than two years, but it is now it's becoming interesting, that is why the sudden focus into that direction. It didn't really make sense to start pushing content into it before.
I totally disagree with the 2003 comparison and how WoW distracted the development. The tournament at MLG Columbus a few weeks ago was probably the best eSport event I have watched online.
I agree with you on the Valve matter, but there is an easy answer to it. They do not want to get into eSports, it is simple as that (many have tried to convince them otherwise for a very long time). Blizzard on the other hand are going the opposite direction with full time positions within this field.
eSports is SO much stronger now compared to 2003. From everything like web site traffic, to quality of event production to entertainment value and last but not least recognition.
Maybe you are just getting old? :)
I think twitter is great. IDK who is and who isn't from the states, but twitter is huge over here. CNN even did a twitter race live to the most followers. I feel like everywhere I go I see a twitter link on a site. I feel like it is a good way to follow people. If your an athlete, or a famous person it is an easy way to answer fan mail. Only 140 characters not that hard to read and answer quick.
www.twitter.com/scott_ford if anyone wants to follow!
^^ alot of tweets over the past weekend about @skgaming wow usa team on lan, so check them out.
