The Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) is one of the world's most prestigious gaming events.
This year it saw thousands upon thousands of players and spectators attend the Grand Finals in Paris, not to mention the tens of thousands of online spectators. In the 2005 Grand Finals event of the ESWC, the Counter-Strike tournament crowned compLexity the champions - with SK Gaming's old Danish team placing second. The 2006 event - like this year's, will be host to numerous competitions in a variety of different games, on both PC and console.
Only recently have the ESWC organisation announced some information regarding the date, place and prize funds of the 2006 Grand Finals tournament. The event is scheduled to be played between Tuesday 27th of June and Sunday 2nd of July 2006, and will be held in Paris.
The venue for the 2006 Grand Finals is to be The Palais Omnisports of Paris Bercy. This is one of the largest indoor sporting arenas in Europe, and expects to attract more than 40,000 spectators. A couple of pictures of the venue can be found below:
The total prize fund for the 2006 Grand Finals is said to be around $400,000 - a huge amount for an eSports event, this just shows how much and how fast eSports is growing.
Part of the official announcement from the ESWC organisation can be found below:
“The Grand Final of the 4th Electronic Sports World Cup will be held from Tuesday 27th June to Sunday 2nd July 2006 in Paris. 800 champions from all around the world will challenge each other in different disciplines (PC and console - announced soon) with more than 400,000 dollars prize money to share among the winners. All of them will have won their place by taking part in their national qualifying competitions, organized in more than 50 countries. All the Finals will be staged in The Palais Omnisports of Paris Bercy, one of the main indoor sporting Arena of the Europe, with more than 40,000 spectators expected.”
Like previous years, there will be separate qualifiers held in a number of different countries - these qualifiers will give the winners their chance to participate in the Grand Finals in Paris.
We wish all teams and players participating in the qualifiers the bets of luck. And good luck to everyone who makes it to the Grand Finals!
