22 Hour Drive to WEG 3
After an eleven hour long drive from El Paso in Texas to Los Angeles in California, Carlos "BoO" Armendariz from Check Six got his spot for WEG 3 without playing a single game as he was the only Warcraft 3 player who showed up.
This season, WEG decided to hold five qualifier tournaments in various parts of the world. However, the Los Angeles qualifier, which was held Saturday, September 3, drew only one Warcraft 3 player. With such a low turnout, the question is if this new system is better than the old one with direct invitations to players.
For Warcraft 3, only two players got official invitations to the qualifier. A lot of players declined because of school, though BoO and Matt "u5.lnclnerator" Schlenker both accepted. The latter had decided to take the semester off school to try for WEG. Unfortunately, the invitation arrived the same week as the qualifier, and by that time, Schlenker had already registered for another semester and paid his tuition.
BoO and lnclnerator were originally going to play a best out of five match for the one Warcraft 3 spot from America. But in the end, BoO spent a total of 22 hours in the car for his spot.
The Counter-Strike tournament had two WEG spots up for grabs, but only three teams showed up: NetFragz, Turmoil and JaX Money Crew. They played a round robin that ended 1-1 for all teams, so the round scores were used as a tiebreaker. Unfortunately for NetFragz, they had lost more rounds than the others and so JaX Money Crew and Turmoil will represent South-West America in WEG Season 3.
