NA S3 Qualifiers: Day 1 Recap

ImageThe first day of the NA Season 3 Qualifiers is over, and after a grand showing eight teams have fought tooth and nail to advance to the quarter finals.

The dust has settled, and after a fourteen hour day only eight teams have made it to the quarter finals. The day was filled with various team comps including double bruiser, AD assassins and double ranged ADs, colorful commentating over dozens of elimination rounds, but in the throng of PvP a few glorious and infamous moments have made their way into League of Legends history.

The first round of the day consisted of Group B.

Group B

Team FeaR Gaming
Good Game University (Formerly Team Dynamic)
Team TowerdiveTV
Epik Gaming

Even in the first grouping it didn't take long for the dominate teams to start off strong. FeaR and GGU began by taking their first matches, sending TowerdiveTV and Epik Gaming into an elimination match against the other. Epik Gaming lost to TowerdiveTV and became the first team of the tournament to be eliminated from the qualifier.

FeaR dominated GGU in their matchup, securing a place in the quarter final by a perfect 2 – 0 in their bracket. GGU won their elimination match against TowerdiveTV, sending the hopefuls from the 5v5 Ladder Tournament home with Epik Gaming.

Trevor 'Salce' Salce tweeted shortly after their elimination that with their loss today that community favorite Epik Gaming was no more.

Qualifiers: FeaR, Good Game University

Group C

Dirtnap Gaming
Meat Playground
1 Trick Ponies
Falafel Gaming

The second group mirrored the first from start to finish. The top seeded Dirt Nap Gaming came out strong in both of their showings, beating out Falafel Gaming and Meat Playground on their way to becoming the third team in the quarter finals. Although 1 Trick Ponies had an up and down experience with a loss to Meat Playground and a win against Falafel Gaming they were eventually sent home in the final elimination round by the dominance of Meat Playground.

Qualifiers: Dirt Nap Gaming, Meat Playground

Group A

Team Curse Academy
The Brunch Club (Formerly She Said She Was Level 18)
Pulse eSports
compLexity Gaming

Group A included one of the heavyweights of NA: Curse Gaming. Although they must prove themselves in the qualifying tournament their records are well documented, and their players are well known both through their streaming and, for better or worse, their antics throughout the league. With the most credentials and experience under their belt they made quick work of the competition, joining FeaR, GGU, DNG, and MP in the quarter finals. The rest of the bracket panned out along with the seeding: the bottom seeded teams from the online qualifier (Pulse eSports and compLexity Gaming) were both eliminated from eligibility for the LCS, and The Brunch Club finished the bracket 2 – 1 and won a bid into the next round.

Qualifiers: Curse Gaming, The Brunch Club

Group D

Azure Gaming
MRN
Cloud 9 (Formerly Team NomNom)
The Salad Bar

In the final bracket of the day the key note coming in was that none of the teams who qualified via the 5v5 Ranked Ladder Online Qualifier had made it beyond the first round. With the pressure building it was up to MRN and The Salad Bar to continue a bid to go from unknown to pro. Azure Gaming opened the first match by rolling over The Salad Bar, sending them to an elimination round against the winner of MRN and Cloud 9. The match was underway, and both teams were dead even when the most bizarre occurrence of the tournament started: a base race with MRN pushing in on top lane and Cloud 9 pushing the mid. It was over in a heartbeat, and MRN became the first team from the Online Qualifier to win their opening matchup with a win over the lower seeded Cloud 9. MRN would go on to win their next match against the top seeded Azure Gaming, being the first 5v5 Ladder team to advance to the quarter finals: a single series away from qualifying for Riot's LCS.

Only one match remained in the juggernaut of a day, and in a move that reminded many of Season 1 Cloud 9 sent a ranged AD carry mid in lieu of running an AP. It proved unsuccessful, however, and Azure Gaming advanced as the final team in the quarter finals.

Qualifiers: Azure Gaming, MRN

With the first day finished it is on to the quarter finals tomorrow. Eight teams remain, but only five will qualify to move beyond this tournament. Tune in tomorrow at SK to read in-depth recaps of the Best of Three series!
