"Free to Play" model as an option

ImageAt the Valencia eSports Congress the lead designer of Starcraft II, Dustin Browder, had to answer the question if Blizzard ever thought of a "free to play option" for Starcraft II.

As two big names in eSport, League of Legends and DotA 2, are free to play, it was not really surprising that the Dustin Browder would get that same question as well. It makes sense as the more people being able to play a game the bigger and more important a game will get. LoL and DotA 2 are two big games growing very fast and getting a lot of attention, also because they are for free.

Browder said that Blizzard is "looking at free to play as an option for the multiplayer". This leaves a lot of room for speculations but it seems unlikely that there will be a free to play option very soon as Browder added:

"We don’t know how we would monetise it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them."

As Blizzard is still working on patches for Wings of Liberty, on patches and balance improvement for Heart of the Swarm and another expansion that is yet to be developed and released, there is enough left to do for them before they worry about the free to play option. So far a lot of people already bought Starcraft II - the hype and the popularity of the game is still rising and things are going pretty good. One thing is for sure as well: A definitive answer has a different style.
