Road to Gamescom: Carl 'ForellenLord' Lückmann

ImageWith the Gamescom approaching and all the eight teams practicing as hard as possible, some of them still had time to answer a few questions. Let's take a closer look at Team ALTERNATE's mindset for this upcoming tournament!

You've probably heard about DE Carl 'ForellenLord' Lückmann, the player with the highest ever solo queue elo in all three original servers, but he's not only that, he's also the team captain of the German Team ALTERNATE , one of the participants in the European Regionals. Thanks to their steady line-up and two participations in IEM events they are one of the 8 teams that will battle for the chance to represent Europe at the Season 2 Championships.

Hello, ForellenLord! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

"Hi, I am Carl, 18, living in Bochum, Germany. I am the leader of the Team Alternate League of Legends team."

We are one week away from the most important European tournament - the Regional qualifiers for Season 2 Championship. How did your preparation for it look like? Are you satisfied with it or think you should have done more?

"We play as much as we can, sadly we couldn't do a bootcamp because our sc2 team is in it at the moment. We should have done more in my opinion, but life is hard and I can't change it. But we still are well prepared for the game against CLG.eu."

The bracket for the tournament was more or less known after the Warsaw tournament ended. Did the fact that you know your first opponent and the possible next ones way earlier than in other tournaments helped you in figuring out your strategies?

"It does help a lot. We did watch some replays from clg.eu. Analyzed their playstyle etc etc. A long question but I don't know what else to say."

What do you think of the format of the tournament? Is single elimination good enough for such an important tournament that decides who gets to attend the Championship?

"A single elimination with a loserbracket would have been better in my opinion. We now have one of the strongest opponent in the first matchup. At least it's bo3. A bo5 in the finals would have been awesome as well. The actual format does guarantee crazy action from the beginning. Maybe Riot thought single elimination is enough because to get so far in the circuit is already like playing 2893 games. Or they just have no time at the Gamescom."

What are your expectations going into the tournament? As “underdogs” do you think you can get one of the three spots for the Championship or is your aim just to show your best performance against CLG.eu?

"Our aim is, as mentioned before, to win one of these three spots. It's senseless to attempt such a big tournament with the aim "we cant win anyways maybe we win one map". We will try our best, we will give our best and we will get under the top3."

Do you have any predictions for the teams that are going to take the top 3 places?

"M5. Every other spot is open. Any team can win."

You’re a relatively old team with a steady line-up. What are your strongest and weakest points as a whole?

"We had many changes. Only three members are the old ones. Unso, Fisch and me. So we are pretty new and I can't really tell what our weakest and strongest point is. We will see."

Have you come up with some special strategies or team comps for the Regionals? Should we expect surprises from you or are you just gonna stick to the common "meta"?

"The answer is obvious: I won't tell you. But nice try."

If there was one thing you could have changed in the patch that’s going to be used at Gamescom, what would that be?

"One thing, hmm. Nerf nunualistarmalphitekarthus. This hero is too strong."

You are famous in the community as the player with highest ever reached ELO in solo queue. How did you achieve that and is it helping you when playing with Alternate?

"I achieved it by playing soloq. I have no secret, I just play. I don't flame my mates, at least I try to. I have a lot of practice against other high elo players. But to be honest the skilllevel in soloq is really low, compared to premade."

Thank you for taking off your time to answer these questions! Any final shoutouts that you want to share with the readers?

"Thank you guys for reading this interview. Don't forget to check out my stream at Twitch.tv. And thank you Team ALTERNATE for your great support."
