ImageWith the Round of 8 kicking off tomorrow with our very own MC. We are here to tell you how these players got here, so you might have a better idea of what to expect from the Code S Round of 8 matches.

If you did not have the chance to see the amazing Round of 16 games, or if you need a reminder of what unfolded. Then you've come to the right place.

We are going to have an in depth recap at every series played and see who managed to qualify and who was eliminated.

With the like of Min Chul 'MC' Jang, Jong Hyeon 'xxxMVP' Jeong, Jung-Hoon 'MarineKing' Lee and Johan 'NaNiwa' Lucchesi it was set to be an action packed round of games.

Group C and D - Page 2

Group A

Set 1 KR Jong Hyeon 'xxxMVP' Jeong vs KR Young Seo 'TaeJa' Yoon

The first set seemed to be an easy to call match up. The kind of new Terran Taeja against the sheer force, that is the four time GSL champion MVP.

However the first match set the tone for the rest of the day as LiquidTaeja held a 2 base allin with some impressive defensive play.

In game 2 MVP opts to go with a mechbuild once again, while Taeja goes for a marine marauder tank variation, but is unable to deal with a three base power play from MVP.

The last deciding game is being played on Whirlwind, with both players going cc first. MVP tries to go for an early +1 marine timing attack with two medivacs, but is greeted with an arc of Taejas marines and one beautifully placed siege tank from Taeja. Because Taeja went for an earlier third cc and caught up on upgrades with MVP, this little advantage turned into a big one, as Taeja was not dropping the ball. Taeja continued to press his advantage by dropping MVP, while taking out attacks on his third and drops in his main without taking any significant damage. Eventually MVP was forced to GG out.

Set 2 KR Kim 'viOlet' Dong Hwan vs. KR Sang Won 'Seed' Ahn

The result of Set 1 made the loser of this match face MVP next, making losing this even scarier. Violet the winner of MLG Spring Arena #2 against the teammate of MVP, Seed.

First game gets decided in the mid game by a nicely executed Immortal push,
with some great blink micro and cute warp prism play by Seed.

In Game 2 Violet deflects all pressure Seed is trying to put on him and eventually just overruns his forces with good flanking tying up the series 1-1.

Game 3 starts on Entombed Valley with pretty standard openings for the map, fast third for Seed and a quick fourth for Violet. While Violet transitions into infestors and going the usual tech choice; hive, Seed went for a massive 11gate +3attack timing attack. Showing really good blink micro, Seed overruns violets ling roach infestor army, winning the set and advances into Ro8.

Set 3 KR Young Seo 'TaeJa' Yoon vs. KR Sang Won 'Seed' Ahn

Liquid Taeja and an IM Seed, not something many people would have predicted are now meeting in the 3rd match, with TvP being Taejas worst match up, but having just taken out none other than MVP and being filled with confidence.
Image
In Game 1 Seed decides to open up with a 4gate rush. Taeja making a critical blunder, attacking the neutral supply depot with his bunker instead of targeting Seeds Stalker, causing him to lose the first game.

Seed opens up the second game with early gateway pressure once again this time a six gate of 2bases and manages to break Taejas bunkers, forces a lift on the natural and even killing the engineering bay, which cancels Taejas +1attack.
Seed secures his advantage by defending every droop attempt, tech switches into collosi and overwhelms Taeja and takes the series 2-0.

Set 4 KR Kim 'viOlet' Dong Hwan vs. KR Jong Hyeon 'xxxMVP' Jeong

This is the other side of the unlikely outcome of Group A. Violet against MVP. So far MVP hasn't been playing well and looks very beatable.

Game 1 starts out on Whirlwind with violet going standard fast 3rd base, playing it safe by getting roaches and MVP going for reactor helion/Banshee. Both players not taking any significant damage are entering into a strong mid game with good upgrades and lots of production capabilities. After multiple huge army trades and much multi-pronged harass, violet manages to win an amazing 37minute ZvT, taking Game 1.

Game 2 on Ohana starts out with MVP once again going for the helion/banshee openingm but transitioning into mech this time. Violet scouts this rather quickly and begins massing roaches. As Violet maxes out he loads up all his roaches and ends MVPs GSL run with a rain of roaches amidst his army, destroying it in seconds. This means that Violet will face Taeja in the final match of Group A.

Set 4 KR Young Seo 'TaeJa' Yoon vs. KR Kim 'viOlet' Dong Hwan

Liquid Taeja against Violet in the last Set of Group A with Seed advancing and MVP being out, is probably not the most predicted scenario but it turn out to be quite an interesting one.

Game 1 starts out being a very intense TvZ, with Taeja going for a tankless bio/blueflame helion strong midgame with violet trying to hold on with Ling baneling. After holding an insane amount of drops, harass and pushes violet pulls through with a strong ultra/ling/baneling/infestor army, going 1:0 against the terran from Team Liquid.

In game 2 Taeja gives a dominant performance pressuring and harassing violet to death with helions, Banshees and marine drops ending the game relatively quickly.

The deciding game 3 is played out on Daybreak. Both players are gearing up for a really strong midgame going for early thirds and early upgrades. Even though Taejas drops didn´t seem to do any damage at all, he is keeping up on expansions and upgrades. After absorbing a huge ultralisk, zergling, baneling, infestor attack, Taeja is able to take a nice position killing violets 4th. After this Taeja holds on to his advantage killing violets 4th once again forcing him to gg and advancing into ro8

KR Young Seo 'TaeJa' Yoon and KR Sang Won 'Seed' Ahn advance into Round of 8!

Group B

Set 1 KR Dong Hyun 'Symbol' Kang vs. KR Hyun-Woo 'Squirtle' Park

The first game of the Group of Death, between the possible royal roader and the semifinalist of last season.

Game 1 starts out with Squirtle going for a stargate, after FFE while Symbol goes with a standard 3base opening. Squirtle, managing to do a lot of damage with his opening, transitions into a quick 2 Collosus 2Base allin and takes game 1 with good force fields and 2 manner nexi at the end.

Symbol predictably chooses Daybreak for Game 2, going for the usual 3 Base with Squirtle going FFE into 8gate Blink with a robo, while trying to take a third.
After his third is canceled multiple times he goes for the allin push. Symbol is not able to hold with his roach ling army and gets beat into the losers match 0:2.

Set 2 KR Min Chul 'MC' Jang vs. KR Jung-Hoon 'MarineKing' Lee

Game 1 starts with MC completely scouting the new 2rax into siege tanks strategy that MarineKing is going for. A few minutes later he even spots a marine drop immediately. While MarineKing is setting up his siege tanks outside of MCs natural, MC is calmly building gateway units and immortals. MC crushes MarineKing´s push with scvs and after defending the last desperate drop from MarineKing, MC pushes his way to victory.

MarineKing picks Antiga Shipyard and the players spawn cross position which makes MarineKing´s choice to go for cc first seem like a very good idea initially. MC though, goes for a 4gate Blink observer build and manages to catch a bunch of marines in the middle of the map with his Stalkers. After that MC keeps blinking into the main and is able to take MarineKing out with some good blink micro.

Set 3 KR Min Chul 'MC' Jang vs. KR Hyun-Woo 'Squirtle' Park

MC vs Squirtle, a PvP at the top of the Group of death, this was bound to be an intense Set of games.

Game 1 starts out on Entomed valley with Squirtle being able to deny Mc´s 3gate pressure build and even gets to snipe a few stalkers. While MC goes for a robo followed by a robo bay for collosi, Sqirtle goes for blink, pinning MC in his base and getting an earlier expansion. MC continues to fall behind and after his push fails he is forced to gg.

MC chooses Metropolis as the second map and chooses a 2gate robo build. Squirtle meanwhile opts for an aggressive 4gate build which goes completely unscouted by MC. Squirtle pushes into MCs base, building pylons in his Base and even killing the pylon powering both of MCs gates and his robo, but MC somehow manages to hold with some unbelievable micro.
Image
After this MC goes for a double Immortal drop with dark templar support, which proves to be too much for Squirtle to handle, bringing the set to a 1-1.

Game 3, the deciding game of the set, is played on Daybreak. Both players are going 1 gate Robo at the start of the game, after which MC goes for an expansion, while Squirtle adds 2gates and a robo bay. Squirtle tries to kill MC with his first collosus, but MCs immortals together with impeccable micro prove to be too much, stopping Squirtles push and making MC the first player to get out of the Group of Death and into the Ro8.

Set 4 KR Dong Hyun 'Symbol' Kang vs. KR Jung-Hoon 'MarineKing' Lee

This Loser match should favor the Zerg player, seeing how Symbol took out MarineKing in the Ro32 2:0 in a very convincing fashion.

MarineKing though seem not to be fazed by this at all as he goes for a cc first build in the first game. Symbol gets a perfect read on MarineKing, by going up to 3 hatcheries before pool, which leads Marinking to respond with a fast 3rd cc. While MarineKing tries to go for a Marine/blueflamhelion push, Symbol manages to do big damage with a Ling run by, which also grants him enough time to get baneling speed, with which he successfully defends Marinkings push. Symbol decides to punish this mistake by maxing out on mutalisks, zerglings, banelings and just overrun MarineKing, winning him game 1.

Both Players seem to be confident in being able to win in the late game, with them going cc first and 3 hatch before pool respectively. This time MarineKing delays his third CC in favor of pressuring Symbol though, with him being only able to defend with zerglings and banelings. After successfully defending the pressure, with the only damage done being forced to build units, Symbol tries to go for the same kind of zerlging baneling mutalisk bust like last game but MarineKing proves to be too well set up. MarineKing uses this to take an early third and keeps denying Symbol taking additional bases after his fourth while he himself lifts his fourth every time a run by happens. Symbol going for ultralisk zergling infestor is unable get an expansion up and eventually runs out of resources making the score 1:1.

Just as the games before both players going for an economic opening, with MarineKing choosing marine, helion and medivac pressure once again over an extremely fast third cc. While he is able to make Symbol waste a lot of banelings, with some nice split micro and putting up his own third, he fails to kill the third by just a sliver of health. Symbol counterattacks and successfully kills MarineKings army every time MarinKing tries to push with zerglings banelings ultralisks and infestor and eventually transitions into broodlords. After 33 minutes MarinKings gg´s out of one of the best TvZ we have seen in a while.

Set 3 KR Dong Hyun 'Symbol' Kang vs. KR Hyun-Woo 'Squirtle' Park

Game 1, a rematch of the first set, is going to decide if Symbol can go on, on his royal road, or if Squirtle can finally evolve to win his first GSL.

The first game beginning on Daybreak which we know Symbol is very comfortable on. Squritle once again chooses to do a 8gate blink and observer strategy, but this time being more careful with taking his third, getting hallucination for extra safety.
Image
Symbol goes for a quick maxed out army of roaches with upgrades and overlord drop. Once maxed out, Symbol droops into Squirtles main while attacking the third at the same time wearing him down and taking game 1.

Game 2 on Entombed Valley Squirtle predictably goes for a fast third while Symbol does not go far the fast fourth but sticking to his 3base roach drop play. Squirtle pushes with immortal and sentries but ends up getting destroyed by mass roach drop, making the force fields largely useless. With this win over none other than Squirtle, Symbol advances into Ro8.
