GSL Code S Ro16 Group A Preview

By Graham 'messioso' Pitt

ImageAfter five weeks of intense action the GSL Code S is down to just sixteen players. Today we will preview the first day of this weeks action, Group A!

The Ro32 provided some huge upsets this season, with last seasons champion KR Soo Ho 'DongRaeGu' Park and three time GSL champion KR Jae-Duck 'NesTea' Lim fell at the groupstage leaving the Zerg with underwhelming numbers in the Ro16.

Some big name Terrans also failed to progress such as recent IPL 4 champion KR Lee-Seok 'aLive' Han and two time GSL champion KR Seong Won 'MMA' Mun

In their place we see players such as KR Hyun-Woo 'Squirtle' Park who has progressed from team league into a solo force, as well as the only foreigner SE and 14 year old KR Seong Ju 'Maru' Cho, the youngest player ever in the GSL, who all topped their groups

The GSL Code S round of 16 is played out in a "Dual Tournament" groupstage format which is explained below.

Dual Tournament GSL Code S Format

The players each play one opponent, the winners and losers from each of those matches then play each other.

The winner of the winners match is through as 1st of the group, the loser of the losers match is confirmed as bottom of the group.

The two players each with 1 loss and 1 win then play each other, the winner going 2-1 and taking 2nd, with the loser going 1-2 and taking 3rd.

The top two players progress to the Ro8, whilst the bottom two drop to the Code S Ro12.

The full groups and how they were chosen can be found here.

The Players

KR Min-Soo 'Genius' Jung

Last seasons runner-up, a former Blizzcon Champion and a mainstay in Code S for the majority 2011. Foiled last season in the final by his team mate KR Soo Ho 'DongRaeGu' Park, he will be back to try and do one better this season.

In picking the Swedish Protoss NaNiWa he said he had no reasoning, he just had to pick someone. He also stated he wants NaNiWa to pick a Terran, which he did.

Genius is currently undefeated in best of 3/5 PvP sets in the GSL, beating both SKs own KR and KR Sang Won 'Seed' Ahn in the past few months alone.

SE

One of the most controversial players but also one of the most talented. An MLG champion and consistently one of the best foreigners in 2011. In late 2011 and into 2012 he has been living full time in Korea in various team houses, finally settling in the Startale house due to their partnership with his Quantic team.

He was given a foreigner seed in August, October and November Code A and played in the F.United team for the GSTL. At the end of this run he was 1-10 with his only win in being in the GSTL, against Genius. He said it was a bad decision to pick him and given his form currently, those words may ring true.

After going down one set against KR Kim 'Puzzle' Sang Jun he took the next 2 maps and then proceeded to 2-0 KR Kim Dong 'Ryung' Won and finish top of his group.

NaNiwa stated at the group selection that he didn't mind what race he picked, but that the players he wanted to pick were already taken. So he chose SuperNoVa because he believed that he only plays well when he has time to prepare, and with the matches being less than a week away, he would be disadvantaged.

KR Young Jin 'SuperNoVa' Kim

A Code S mainstay throughout the second half of 2011, but only once progressing to the Ro8 back in GSL October 2011. His first match will be against Virus, whom he chose because to get revenge for a loss in the GSL November Code S Ro32, the first and only time these two have met in an official match.

He came through his Ro32 with relative ease, dispatching KR Sang Won 'Seed' Ahn 2-0 and his Ro16 opponent KR Min-Soo 'Genius' Jung 2-1, showing some great TvP that will serve him well again in this group, with his second match being against a Protoss regardless of results.

KR Park Joon 'Virus' Yong

Statistically the weakest player in this group, he was in the Code S the majority of 2011 but like his first opponent SuperNova, has never progressed past the Ro16. However in beating both KR Jae-Duck 'NesTea' Lim and KR in the Ro32, who have a combined 5 GSL titles, he made a statement of intent to change that statistic.

TvT is his worst match up by far at less than 40% win rate. Going up against KR Young Jin 'SuperNoVa' Kim who boasts nearly 60% will be a very difficult challenge, which if he overcomes will reward him a TvP, his best match up and could see him top his group again.

He believes that his group is easier than his Ro32 group, time will tell.

The matches

The first two matches are pre-determined, matches 3 through to 5 are based off the winners and losers of the previous matches.

Match 1 - Genius vs NaNiwa

PvP is always a volatile match up, although some players have pulled off unbelievable win streaks in the match up. With this match, there isn't too much to say, it really is too hard to call, but I'm going to give it to the foreigner on this occasion.

SE to win 2-1

Match 2 - SuperNoVa vs Virus

Statistically Virus's worst match up, and his form is currently quite poor having lost to a wide variety of players and styles recently. However the last time these two met, Virus was the victor. However since then SuperNoVa has been gaining some experience in international tournaments.

KR Young Jin 'SuperNoVa' Kim to win 2-0

Match 3 - NaNiwa vs SuperNoVa

SuperNoVas strongest match up will put him in good stead in this match, however NaNiwa is one of the most formidable foreigners and is good across the board, boasting 60%+ win rates in all his match ups internationally. Not much can be read into NaNiwas match vs Ryung in the Ro32 due to Ryungs poor TvP making this a hard one to predict as translating international form into the GSL is tough.

SE to win 2-0

Match 4 - Genius vs Virus

Virus gets the opportunity to showcase his best match up, however Genius is the player who 3-0'd recent IPL 4 champion aLive in the semi finals last season alongside finishing 2-2 overall against the in-form MarineKing during the Ro16.

KR Min-Soo 'Genius' Jung to win 2-0

Match 5 - Genius vs SuperNoVa

The decider that I personally think will be the best match of the day. Both will have been able to watch each other play the match up in the previous rounds, and both are close statistically in it. However, I do not feel SuperNoVa is quite ready for another Ro8 appearance, and currently Genius is playing some great PvT.

KR Min-Soo 'Genius' Jung to win 2-1
