ImageThis is the first SK Champion Spotlight. If you ever wanted to play Udyr on top-lane, but you did not know what to build or to max first, this is definitely the article you want to read!

Welcome to the first episode of the SK Champion Spotlight! Today we'll cover one of Kev1n's favorite champions: Udyr, the Animal Spirit.

You may ask yourself: What exactly is the SK Champion Spotlight?
Basically, it is a champion guide, which will help you play any champ you want. The special thing about these guides will be the fact, that they have been created in cooperation with a professional SK.LoL player.

Let's start off with some basics about Udyr:
Cost: 3150 Influence Points or 975 Riot Points

Which lane fits Udyr best?
Udyr is a very solid pick on top lane. He is a tanky melee champion, which perfectly fits the Meta. Udyr is also a common jungler, however, we will only take a look at his viability on top lane.

What makes Udyr unique?
Udyr is one of two champions that do not have an 'ultimate' in the traditional sense. You are able to put a point into the 'R' ability from the very first level. However, this has as downside aswell: Udyr can't max out every skill, since all of them have 5 ranks. This basically means that Udyr is able to max three abilities (with one only reaching it's 3rd rank) or to max two abilities (with the other two each reaching their 4th rank).

Now that we know what Udyr basically is, let's take a look at his abilities:

Passive: Monkey's Agility
(Innate): Udyr's attack speed is increased by 10% for 5 seconds each time he switches stances. This effect can stack up to 3 times. Switching stances sets off a 1.0 second global cooldown.

Keep this strong passive up, especially when you kill turrets / inhibitors. Refresh it with switching to your Turtle Stance and immediately go back to your Tiger Stance.

Q - Tiger Stance
(Stance) – Activation: Udyr's next attack will deal magic damage over 2 seconds. In addition, Udyr gains an attack speed buff for 5 seconds. This stacks additively with his persistent attack speed bonus.

Persistent effect: Udyr's attack speed is increased.
Cooldown: 6 seconds.

Cost: 55 / 50 / 45 / 40 / 35 mana
Magic Damage: 30 / 80 / 130 / 180 / 230 (+1.5 per attack damage)
Persistent Attack Speed Bonus:20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40%
Activation Attack Speed Bonus:15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35%

This is your main stance, in terms of single target damage. Thanks to this stance, you are a terror in lane. In most cases, you max Q first. Please note that the active on this ability deals magic damage.

W - Turtle Stance
(Stance) – Activation: Udyr gains a shield that absorbs damage for 5 seconds or until it has absorbed the full amount of damage.

Persistent effect: Udyr's attacks cannot crit, but they restore a percentage of his damage as health and mana.
Cooldown: 6 seconds

Cost: 55 / 50 / 45 / 40 / 35 mana
Shield Strength: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+0.5 per ability power)
Damage to Health Restored Ratio: 10 / 12 / 14 / 16 / 18%
Damage to Mana Restored Ratio: 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9%

The Turtle Stance allows you to farm safely and it means no one can trade against you. It's basically the main source of Udyr's sustain, as it allows you to heal up after trades and negate incoming damage. At max level, it pretty much makes you impervious to physical damage.

E- Bear Stance
(Stance) – Activation: Udyr gains increased movement speed for a few seconds.

Persistent effect: Udyr mauls his enemies with such force that they are stunned for 1 second when they are hit. This effect can only occur once every 6 seconds on the same target.
Cooldown: 6 seconds

Cost: 55 / 50 / 45 / 40 / 35 mana
Movement Speed Bonus: 15 / 18 / 21 / 24 / 27%
Movement Speed Duration: 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 seconds

This stance is your initiation move. Not only that the stun is strong in a 1v1 fight, in team fights it can be used to lock down multiple targets, which is amazingly strong. This is your chasing/fleeing ability, because of the amazing movespeed bonus that the active gives you. The fact that you can run into Galio's ultimate while having Bear Stance active to interrupt it, makes Bear Stance even more awesome.

R - Phoenix Stance
(Stance) – Activation: Udyr sends out pulsing waves of fire dealing magic damage each second to nearby enemies for 5 seconds. During this time Udyr's ability power and attack damage are increased.

Persistent effect: Every third attack, Udyr engulfs the enemies in front of him in flames, dealing magic damage.
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Flame range: 625
Wave radius: ~50

Cost: 55 / 50 / 45 / 40 / 35 mana
Activation's Magic Damage Per Wave: 15 / 25 / 35 / 45 / 55(+0.25 per ability power)
Activation's Total Magic Damage: 75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+1.25 per ability power)
Bonus Ability Power: 16 / 24 / 32 / 40 / 48

There is not much use for Phoenix Stance, unless when jungling or playing versus Yorick. However, you will have points to spend on this skill anyways, so use it to clear minion waves faster. Phoenix Stance also grants bonus AD/AP for 5 seconds, which buffs the damage of your Tiger Stance active and increases the amount shielded by your Turtle Stance active. Use this to your advantage in the late game. Against a team composition that generally lacks mobility you can put only three points in bear stance and max out Phoenix Stance to get 48 AD/AP for free.

2.: Masteries
The usual top lane masteries are 21/9/0. Thanks to those points in offense, you can deal a big bunch of damage with tiger stance, therefore you can melt your opponent. The 9 defense points depend on the enemies: If you play versus a bruiser, make sure to take the bonus armor, however if you play versus an AP (most likely Kennen or Vladimir), you should instead opt for the extra magic resistance.

3.: Runes
For runes you should take 9 x flat attack damage(RED); 9 x flat armor(YELLOW); 9 x flat magic resist(BLUE); 3 x attack damage Quintessences.

4.: Spell order
Versus bruisers (offensive): q → w → e → q → q → w → q → e → q → w → e → w → e → w e → r → r → r → r → r
Versus APs (defensive): w → q → e → q → q → w → q → w → q → e → w → e → w → e → e → r → r → r → r → r

5.: Play style, Items
You want to start with Boots and 3 health pots, no matter what. The main reason is that the movement speed is essential for the harass with your Tiger Stance.

Kevin 'kev1n' Rubiszewski's answer after getting asked which play style fits Udyr:
"Udyr is a pretty aggressive champion, if you go Tiger Stance. Therefore an aggressive play style fits him perfectly."

Playing vs. a Bruiser:
Make sure to play very aggressive, as Kev1n mentioned. Your Tiger Stance is one of the most powerful tools for trading, especially early game. If you feel confident and want to make your enemy cry like a little girl, last hit in bear stance. When your enemy comes into melee range to last hit, BAM STUN TO THE FACE! Land one attack, run forward instantly to animation cancel and get more autoattacks in. Switch to Tiger Stance the instant that you can, and drop the active on your enemy. Again, animation cancel, and switch to Turtle Stance right away. At this point you have 2-3 stacks of Monkey's Agility and a shield from Turtle Stance. The enemy players' stun will have worn off, but you don't care about this, simply rightclick him until he sees the futily of trying to damage trade with you, rinse, and repeat. It's rumoured that laning versus Tiger Udyr turned Gragas into the raging alcoholic he is today.

Playing vs. an AP:
Ranged enemies are definitely harder to beat than most bruisers. They have a slight edge, chiefly due to their ranged poking ability. You will need to play passively against them early on, something Turtle Stance is perfect for. Hence, you spend more early points in Turtle Stance so that you can absorb the ranged harassment with the shield.

General gameplay:

In the first few minutes you won't have your river warded, therefore try to 'read' your enemy. If he acts suspiciously aggressive, make sure to stay back. When reaching about 600 gold, push the lane as hard as you can and port back. Get a Doran's Blade, health pots (if needed) and the most important thing: a ward. Wards save lives. It is very important to have your lane entrance warded, so you can react to ganks. The Doran's Blade will give you an edge, and your enemy should avoid trading blows with you now. If not, punish him!

After hitting the 20 Minute mark, you should normally have following Items: Heart of gold, Wriggle's Lantern, Phage, Merc. Treads. Try to get your Heart of gold fairly quickly, since you want the extra gold income to start ticking as soon as possible. Then go straight for the Wriggle's Lantern. It is a must-have for Tiger-Udyr, as it makes your Tiger Stance active deal a lot more damage, decreases the damage you take from physical damage and increases your sustainability.

Always make sure to be observant in terms of assisting your team mates, especially so once the midgame starts. When your jungler invades to steal an enemy buff, stay vigilant and cover him, because those buff steals can be a game changing factor. With a ward placed in your river, feel free to push your lane. This will give you some time to roam while your lane opponent is force to lasthit under his tower.

Once the laning phase ends, you should start terroring enemies in a team fights. Your job in a team fight is taking one of the enemies carries out: Stick on him/her as well as you can. However, do not get split away from your team due to chasing someone too far. Instead, when you've killed or zoned out your primary target, switch to helping your fragile team mates by peeling enemies off them. If the enemy team is focusing you, use it to your advantage and don't back down. Your team will slice through them, whilst the enemies grow desperate due to your ridiculous ability to soak damage with Turtle Stance.

Endgame build: Wriggles | Merc. Treads | Randuin's Omen | Frozen Mallet (if your team does have a poor amount of CC) or Trinity Force | Atma's Impaler | Banshee's Veil.

TL;DR: Start with Boots + 3 Health pots. Play aggressive vs. Bruisers, passive vs. AP champions. Use your strength and trade against your lane enemy. Buy wards! Always help your mates when invading or when they get chased. Start roaming after ~20 minutes. In team fights take out an enemy carry, but don't get split up due to chasing. Try to make your enemies focus you.

6.: Counter picks
Udyr is good against: Shen, Irelia, Warwick, Olaf, Renekton, Lee Sin, Gankplank, Tryndamere and Wukong
Udyr struggles against: Vladimir, Shyvanna and Yorick
Additional information: This guide is based on the way our very own DE Kevin 'kev1n' Rubiszewski likes to play one of his favorite champions.

I hope you enjoyed reading it, next week we will have another guide, created in cooperation another SK.LoL pro!
