ImageIn-depth analysis of the newest league of legends champion Lulu, the Fae Sorceress including opinions of top tier players.

It has been more than a year since Riot Games released Karma, their most recent support champion. Finally, after this lengthy period of time a new era for support champions has arisen, Lulu, the Fae Sorceress has been released.

After their latest support release, Karma, who in most people opinion was a huge failure, Riot Games seems to have learned some lessons.

Lulu features some very unique mechanics, but even with those unique mechanics she still has pretty much everything a support needs. Lulu is able to polymorph enemy champions, give vision of enemy champions, actively harass, shield your allies, give bonus health to your allies and even knock enemies back!

• Has a great range AOE harass spell with low mana cost, which scales really well on levels.
• A lot of CC.
• Not item reliant.
• Passive scales with levels rather than AP,AD et cetera.
• Amazing ultimate for late game.
• Tons of utility.

• No sustain.
• Slow movement speed.
• No real burst if you actually decide to play her as AP.
• Forced to play aggressive in lane due to her skillset.

Pix, Faerie Companion.

"Pix fires a barrage of 3 bolts, dealing 3 + (2 × level) magic damage each, at whoever Lulu attacks. These bolts are homing but can be blocked by other units."

This passive works wonderful on both support and AP Lulu. This is going to be one of your main sources of harassment alongside “Glitterlance”, one of the important things of supporting is to keep pressuring the enemy, a passive that deals more and more damage every level without needing to buy any offensive items is great for a support. Lulu has really low starting attack damage, if you are playing AP mid and you are getting pushed to the tower, this passive will be a lifesaver for last hitting minions.

" Lulu and Pix each fire a piercing bolt dealing magic damage, slowing enemies hit by 80% for a short duration. This slow decays over time. An enemy can only be damaged by one bolt. "

Range: 925
Cooldown: 7 seconds at all levels
Cost: 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 mana
Magic Damage: 80 / 130 / 180 / 230 / 280 (+0.7 per ability power)
Slow Duration: 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds .

This is an ability you’ll probably end up maxing last on support Lulu, unless you play a really aggressive lane, you should get a point in it pretty early though, it’s a great tool for harassing as well as slowing the enemy. As for AP, this will be your bread and butter ability, your main damage source. The slow from it will greatly help you escape enemy jungler ganks, it's good for chasing fleeing enemies as well. The downside is that the 80% of slow actually decays over time, knowing that the slow duration is only 2 seconds at rank 5, it decays really, really fast. Glitterance fires two bolts that both deal 80/130/180/230/280 each, although if both bolts hit the same champion only one deals damage, however it can hit multiple targets thus this will be your main area of effect damage ability. Glitterlance works with Help, Pix! Really well, I’ll explain how later on.

" On ally cast: Target ally gains 35% movement speed and bonus ability power for 5 seconds.

On enemy cast: Polymorphs an enemy champion for a short duration, disabling their ability to attack or cast spells and reducing their base movement speed by 60."

Range: 650
Cooldown: 18 / 16.5 / 15 / 13.5 / 12 seconds
Cost: 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 mana
Bonus Ability Power: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60
Polymorph Duration: 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 seconds.

Another great ability for Lulu support, scales really well with levels. Whimsy is the only ability in the game which can be used for polymorphing. This new, unique mechanic seems to have a positive feedback among the community, might be for the fact that an enemy champion is polymorphed into a cute little squirrel. Aside from the fact your enemies can’t attack when they are polymorphed, the 60 movement speed decrease combined with 80% from glitterlance slows enemy champions to the point where you can escape from them or chase them down them really easy This ability is one of the more difficult to use abilities a support champion can have. You always need to decide whether to polymorph an enemy or speed up your ally/yourself in different situations. As for AP Lulu, you will end up maxing it last in many cases. Whimsy doesn’t scale off of AP, the 1.5 polymorph duration at rank 1 is already enough to win an exchange and back off without taking more unnecessary damage, the 10 bonus points of ability power at each rank doesn’t make it worth to pick that one point instead of 50 damage that you get by spending the same point in Glitterlance.

Help, Pix!

" On ally cast: Commands Pix to jump to an ally and then follow and aid their attacks instead of Lulu's for 6 seconds. Upon arrival, Pix shields them for 6 seconds.

On enemy cast: Pix deals magic damage to target enemy unit. Pix then follows and grants vision of them for 6 seconds."

Range: 650
Cooldown: 10 seconds
Cost: 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 mana
Shield Strength: 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240 (+0.6 per ability power)
Magic Damage: 80 / 130 / 180 / 230 / 280 (+0.6 per ability power)

If Glitterlance was the bread and butter ability for AP Lulu, Help, Pix! Is the same for support Lulu. The shield does not only shield your teammate, but also activates your passive whenever your teammate attacks, making it work really well with your AD carry because they are usually the ones with large amount of attack speed. You can also use Help, Pix! on an enemy champion, it deals a decent amount of damage and gives a lot of utility by giving vision of an enemy champion for 6 seconds. As I already mentioned, Help, Pix! works really well with Glitterlance. Since Pix and Lulu both fire a bolt of Glitterlance in one direction, if you place Pix onto an ally, Pix will fire a bolt from your ally’s location. You can use this to surprise your enemy.

Wild Growth

" Lulu enlarges her ally, knocking enemies away from them. For 7 seconds, her ally gains bonus health and slows nearby enemies for 1 second."

Range: 900
Cooldown: 110 / 95 / 80 seconds
Cost: 150 mana
Slow Percentage: 30 / 45 / 60%
Bonus Health: 300 / 450 / 600 (+0.5 per ability power)
Just a great ultimate for a support. Pushes enemies back from the teammate you’ve cast your ultimate on, while also slowing them. This is the 3rd hard slow Lulu has, which makes her a chasing and fleeing monster. Cooldown at rank 3 is not that much for ultimate this kind. The bonus health can easily surprise the enemy, the knockback can also be used to knock enemies into your team if an enemy is out of position. Really similar to Janna's ultimate, one Lulu’s ultimate can either win or lose you a team fight. Wild growth can be used to protect your AD carry really efficiently, not only by knocking enemies back, but by also adding the 600HP at rank 3 which is a huge amount of HP for an AD carry. As for AP Lulu, this ultimate has a little bit less worth, usually AP champions really prefer to have a nuke ultimate, something like Annie’s tibbers or Gragas’s explosive cask.

Opinions of professional players

TCM gaming’s support, TCM FI Ville 'Wolvy' Vartiainen.

Lethal: Good morning, Wolvy, I'm here to ask some questions about Lulu, the newest yordle support in the league. What are you general thoughts about her? I know that your teammate, Janitin, plays her as AP mid, and most of the team members dislike it.

"I think she is more viable as a support. She has good trades and utility as a support, but I feel like her damage is too low for an AP carry. Maybe playing double AP could fix that issue though."

Lethal: Have you seen other teams use her against you in online events? How did it go?

"US Alex 'Xpecial' Chu played her against us in SK Trophy tournament. I think the laning was ok, but it's hard to say about anything else since we played a poke setup in that game and I felt like Lulu wasn't too efficient against that kind of matchup."

Lethal: Do you believe we will get to see her at Gamers Assembly or IPL4, which are both next week? I know some US teams like to play her, but we haven’t seen many players play lulu in the European scene.

"Really hard question, but I think we will get to see her if the teams have practiced with her enough and theory crafted some nice team comps with her."

Lethal: Playing Lulu as a support requires lots of vigilance as you can use some abilities both offensively and and defensively, what are your thoughts about this kind of spells?

"I really like them. They make these champions more interesting and also harder to play. Right choice is very rewarding and bad choice can cost your team a lot."

Lulu is one of the most awaited additions to the league of legends for the past year, not only by being a support, but also by being a yordle. She has definitely lived up to the expectations for regular League of Legends players, having majority of things a support needs in her skillset. We’ll get the chance to see how popular she is amongst the professionals in one week, when IPL4 in Las Vegas and Gamers Assembly in Poitiers take place.
