With IEM Kiev imminent, I take a look at what Group A of the League of Legends tournament has to offer, in the first of this two-part preview.Group A promises to be a tough affair, with many questions surrounding all the teams, no matter what, we are ensured of some close matches. Here is how the teams line-up.
SK Gaming
Carlos 'ocelote' Rodríguez Santiago
Patrick 'Nyph' Funke
Adrian 'Candy Panda' Wübbelmann
Kevin 'SR kev1n' Rubiszewski
Benjamin 'SleazyWeazy' Hiller
The SK.LoL team come into the IEM Kiev event with some strong recent performances under their belt. Although SK only confirmed their line-up last week, it is actually well practiced. Kevin has been training with SK since the beginning of December and Sleazy has played with the rest of the team many times before. Couple this with re-uniting Candy, Nyph and Kevin who were all successful in
Team GAMED.DE together and the SK team is looking strong.
Recent results have also been promising, just this past Sunday saw SK Gaming win the Go4LoL weekly tournament with wins over the likes of
Meet Your Makers .
Predicted Group Placing: 1st
White Lotus
'Dumecha'
'Fomko'
'qHzFRC'
'Spawn33'
'Zulin'
White Lotus qualified for IEM Kiev as the National representatives of the Ukraine. Since then it is apparent that they have put a lot of training in. However it is felt that they will still be the relative minnows of the tournament. They currently sit at #36 in the 5x5 Ranked Ladder with 34 wins and 16 losses.
They participated in yesterday's Go4LoL but were eliminated by
Colon Three .
While they are good enough to give all of the teams a challenge, I do feel that White Lotus will finish bottom of Group A, unless the home team advantage pulls through.
Predicted Group Placing: 4th

Team SoloMid
Shan 'Chaox' Huang
Andy 'Reginaid' Dinh
Brian 'TheOddOne' Willey
Christian 'TheRainMan' Kahmann
Alex 'Xpecial' Chu
The North American server has seen few tournaments or competitive play in recent weeks so it is hard to determine current form. However TSM have been seen in action scrimming against some of the top EU teams. Unfortunately for TSM, it appears they have been losing more than they won.
In addition to this, in the last competitive match that TSM played against fellow Group A opponents Curse, they were defeated. Despite the apparent lack of form however, the TSM player's indvidual ELOs are higher than any other NA and EU team.
They currently have 3 players in the Top 5 on the NA server, with Chaox sitting in the #1 spot at 2411 ELO.
Predicted Group Placing: 2nd
Team Curse
'Jaximus'
David 'Cop' Roberson
Steve 'LiQuiD112' Arhancet
Tom 'SYDTKO' Oh
Chang 'Nyjacky' Wang
Curse were called up to the tournament as a replacement after
Goose were forced to pull out. Recently Curse were in action in the CLG Last Call tournament however it was only a brief participation as they were eliminated in the first round. With this recent result and a lack of apparent competitive play recently, one can't help but feel this will be a long journey for Curse although in a BO1 situation they are more than capable of beating anyone in the group.
Predicted Group Placing: 3rd

I expect TSM to have the widest variety of strategies practiced, people really need to learn to realise scrims mean nothing - they'll deliver on LAN for sure.
