GOMtv's 'AoL: The King of Kongs' will pit 8 of the GSL runnersup against each other to decide who is true King of the Kongs. Everyone receives a prize beginning with the number 2.GOMtv has announced its first 'Arena Of Legends' event for 2012 and the title this time is 'The King of Kongs'. This online event will pit eight of the GSL tournament runnersup against each other in a two group tournament leading into a four man playoff. The champion will take home ~$1,915 and a rare first place finish.
The previous Arena Of Legend events were won by
Jung-Hoon 'MarineKing' Lee and
Jong-Hyun 'Mvp' Jung respectively. The first event simply featured top players and fan favourites competing for the title. The second carried them theme of "Team Ace Invitational" and saw the best player nominated from each team, fittingly being won by the man many consider the best in all of SC2.
The Kong name is a reference to the infamous 'Kong line' of BW named in honour of Zerg legend
YellOw, who made the finals of five individual leagues and won none. Those who finished second in multiple individual leagues were said to have joined the Kong line.
In another cute move to fit with the theme GOMtv's prize purse distribution sees all of the prizes, in South Korean Won, beginning with the number 2. The tournament also begins on January 2nd.
Other famous members of the Kong line in BW were Stork, FanTaSy and Jangbi. All managed to win OSL titles later in their careers, and amazingly all against another member of the very same tradition. Stork won the 2008 Incruit OSL final against FanTaSy, FanTaSy returned the favour winning the 2010 Bacchus OSL against Stork and JangBi won the 2011 Jin Air OSL against FanTaSy.
Regardless of the results of this tournament many consider MarineKing to be the true heir to the Kong line tradition, being as he has placed 2nd in three GSL tournaments. What's more he actually won the first Arena Of Legends tournament, and winning special tournaments only is another symptom of the Kong line. YellOw was able to beat his peers in special tournaments, just not when it truly mattered in the big individual finals.
YellOw is best known for his rivalry with BoxeR known as the 'LimJinRok'. Despite BoxeR getting the better of him in the Coca-Cola OSL, KPGA 1st Tour and 2002 WCG finals YellOw actually has a very even career map record against The Emperor.
The only GSL runnersup missing from the list are
Rain, GSL Open Season 3 runnerup, and MMA, GSL Super Tournament runnerup. MMA went on to take down two GSL titles in Code S October and the Blizzard Cup.
