DHW: x6tence takes the title

ImageOut of the four teams remaining after the groupstages, x6tence manages to take out GameSense and 4Kings to take the title of Dreamhack Winter 2011 champions.

With Friday's groupstages completed, four teams remained to fight for the title: EU x6tence to face EU GameSense , and SE Dignitas meeting EU 4Kings in the semifinals.

EU x6tence versus EU GameSense was predicted to be the grand finals, as the two had faced off many times in the finals of Kill the King before in tense, close-knit matches. And as also shown before, GameSense pulled out their notorious Double Vanguard cheese, a composition x6tence showed difficulty dealing with in the past. But despite taking some games with their innovative compositions, x6tence's stable SM/Igni/Pomp powerhouse lineup proved too tight to penetrate, and after a few initial losses x6tence managed to tighten up their game and win it 3-2.

At the other end of the bracket, SE Dignitas and EU 4Kings played out a long-standing rivalry, two of the oldest teams in the scene meeting once again. Both teams took great difficulty dealing with each other, with a lot of composition mixups taking place, but when 4Kings returned to Zab's renowned Glutton their pressure became too hard to handle for the Swedes, steaming into the finals with a 3-1 victory.

The consolation finals between GameSense and Dignitas can sadly be summed up in one word: domination. GameSense's Stalker/Thorn/Alch composition, a highly aggressive combo with insurmountable pressure could be seen as a hardcounter to Dignitas's defensive, somewhat turtle-based style, and the matches showed it. They put up a great fight, but the 3-0 victory for GameSense was inevitable.

Despite significant technical issues with the livestream from the DreamArena, the grand finals were a fitting conclusion of the tournament, with tense, high-paced rounds in every match, both teams sticking with their signature compositions throughout the finals. Every game was as closely fought as the next, perhaps surprisingly so considering previous results between the two, but x6tence consistently managed to get an upper hand on 4Kings through better combo setups and better coordination on ultimates, claiming the championships with a record of 3-0, 3-2, 3-1.
