lurppis: "never been a fan of [CS 1.6]"

ImageWinFakt leader lurppis spoke to ESFIworld about Finnish CS, whether North American CS is dead and how CS:GO might affect his competitive future.

ESFIworld has interviewed the FI WinFakt Fi captain FI Tomi 'lurppis' Kovanen. The former EG tactician discusses his return to Finnish CS, his thoughts on the North American scene and how CS:GO could affect his competitive future.

Asked whether North American CS is "over and done with":

"I think Counter-Strike is still doing fine over in the United States. I think people like to exaggerate everything and that's the case there too. ESEA is still handing out $10k for first place three times a year which is more than any semi good team in Europe (which I consider the US' current level in CS to be) could ever dream about winning. North American CS is basically all Torbull and Laurent, and I think those two guys actually run the best events I've ever attended. Arbalet Cup Dallas was a great example for those who attended."

Assessing WinFakt's 5-6th place performance at e-Stars Seoul:

"I think we definitely should have beaten mousesports with how the game was going up until the point we were up 13-8. If we did, I think we would have had a decent chance at upsetting Na`Vi on nuke as well, which would have turned our tournament around completely. I don't want to sound arrogant but we expected to be better than both project_kr and fnatic, although we probably got one of the worst possible map draws against fnatic. As far as the Na`Vi loss goes, I think we were just out of energy and had to start playing way too soon after the fnatic win, we're still a young team so we don't have as much routine meaning we need to spend more time talking about matches, what we want to do etc and we simply didn't have time or energy left by the time we played Na`Vi. To be fair, I can't say that I would expect to beat Na`Vi on inferno even if we played the next day, but I think the score would have been a lot more reasonable then. Interestingly enough, apart from project_kr on tuscan, it actually felt like we drew each team we played on pretty much the worst possible map, so that was a bummer for us. Overall I think 5-6th is a reasonable assessment of our current level in the world and we're looking to improve upon it in the future."

lurppis' thoughts on the future of CS and the upcoming CS:GO title:

"I don't think the game could possibly be better than CS 1.6 and I don't really buy the whole "sponsors won't give money to an old game" excuse since they're not paying for the game. They're paying for the viewers (which are there). I think the game could be good if they listen to the gamers' feedback and I like the fact they're consulting with some CS 1.6 pros as well in the future so hopefully it will turn out well. In the end, it will come down to whether or not Valve wants it to become big; so far it looks good in the sense that they're more involved with the scene than they have ever before, but you never know, so all we can really do is wait and see. Personally I would rather stick to CS 1.6, but if the competition, tournaments and prize money moves to CS:GO, so will I - I've never been a fan of the game, but the competition."

lurppis has resumed his position as leader of Finland's best team, following his return from playing with EG in the USA. After rejoining a PowerGaming lineup which initially included mostly ex-69N-28E/Roccat players his team is now only made up of him and his brother from that era. The last event which featured a majority of the old generation players was e-Stars Seoul, where they finished 5-6th after defeating project_kr and fnatic.

plastE retired recently and was replaced by former Online Kingdom.fi and PlayZone.fi player JiGetus. The team has allowed received a spot for IEM VI Global Challenge Guangzhou due to Temporary, featuring ex-team-mates fRoD and Storm, were unable to attend due to funding.
