EG discusses patch 1.4.0

ImageEG Zerg player IdrA, Protoss player iNcontrol and Terran player DeMusliM discussed the changes introduced by patch 1.4.0 on myeg.net.

Over at myeg.net EG members discussed StarCraft II patch 1.4.0. US Geoff 'iNcontrol' Robinson, US Gregory 'IdrA' Fields and UK Benjamin 'DeMusliM' Baker represent each of the races and give their thoughts on the different chances and their potential effects.

US iNcontrol (P):

"Blink research time has increased from 110 to 140. Why do you think Blizzard is making this change? How will this affect any blink timing builds you use?

EG.iNcontroL: Blizzard is most likely making this change so the volatility of PvP will go down. As it stands, if one player goes robo, then blink, he is in danger to a timing. Additionally, if one player goes blink faster than the other, the difference is incredibly severe due to low unit count and early timing. This also certainly helps the 1 base all in stuff in PvT and PvZ. All in all, getting blink so fast and only having marines or zerglings to defend is incredibly hard on the Z and T players and makes SC2 fairly shallow when those situations occur."

UK DeMusliM (T):

"The barracks build time has increased from 60 to 65. What do you think is the purpose behind this change? Does this have any serious effect on any of your builds?

EG.DeMusliM: It’s definitely meant to nerf the 11/11 rax, which is a build I often throw out there. What this does to the build is very simple, it just means it arrives a little later than it does now. Proxy rax was too strong on certain maps – and by proxy rax i mean 11/11, if a Zerg went for a hatch first he would get punished very hard, even when scouting the raxs sometimes with very little he can do."

US IdrA (Z):

"The ultralisk’s build time has been decreased from 70 down to 55. You have stated that this was not the problem with the ultralisk. What do you think this decreased build time will do for late game Zergs? What changes do you think are necessary for the ultralisk?

EG.IdrA: It could help ZvT, in high econ games constant tech switches between ultras and broodlords will become quite strong vs terrans who rely on vikings to counter broodlords. However vsTerrans who use ghosts to counter everything it wont change that much. Ultras are unlikely to become good because it just has such strong counters within the game, both immortals and marauders destroy them at silly cost efficiency. The biggest problem with ultras is probably their size and mobility, thats the first thing I would try to address."

iNcontrol best placing was 4th at MLG Dallas this April but since then he has been humiliated in the group play at the last two MLGs. IdrA is widely considered the best American player but despite a 4th place finish at MLG Columbus in June he dropped down to 9th-12th at MLG Anaheim and then lost even earlier to the unknown US TriMaster at MLG Raleigh last month.

DeMusliM was out of action for the majority of 2011 due to a hand injury, after a solid start to the year with a 3rd place finish at the IEM V European Championship, but managed an impressive run through the open bracket of MLG Columbus which was finally stopped by NaDa.
