ImageThere will be no USA representatives for CS 1.6 and SC2 in Busan, South Korea, for the WCG Grand Final. The organisers cited sponsorship funding issues as the reason.

The organisers have announced that there will be no USA representatives for Counter-Strike 1.6 and StarCraft II at the 2011 edition of the World Cyber Games. Due to sponsorship funding issues cuts were made and those two games were the ones to go under the knife, with League of Legends and Crossfire being the games to have American representatives.

An online qualifier will be held for 1.6 but the winner will receive an expenses paid trip to the WCG Pan-Am in São Paulo, Brazil, instead of the WCG Grand Final in Busan, South Korea. The Pan-Am event will be held from November 4th-6th. The Grand Finals are December 8th-11th.

As the US WCG site explains:

"The StarCraft II and Counter-Strike 1.6 online qualifiers will play out and also feed into the online national final. The top two StarCraft II players and top Counter-Strike 1.6 team will receive a trip and advance to the World Cyber Games Pan-Am games in San Paulo, Brazil November 4 – 6, 2011 to compete for cash and prizes. Any player with questions about the changes to the WCG USA program can direct their questions to Fans of each game are invited to enjoy the stream of the soon to be announced online national finals."

This is significant news as the USA has been representated in Counter-Strike in every single edition of the WCG, picking up two gold medals and a silver medal. In 2004 and 2005 Team3D triumphed in Condition Zero and Source, while in 2003 3D fell short against the impossibly dominant SK.swe team. The latter tournament was the last time the WCG was held in South Korea.

For the first WCG a mixteam made up of DoP and rs players was invited to compete. From 2002 to 2006 Team3D won every USA qualifier, despite the mantle of best American team having passed to coL from 2005 onwards. In 2007 eMg won the qualifier and in 2008 the team had become EG.usa and repeated the feat. In 2009 and 2010 the fRoD-era EG teams won the national qualifier. The USA has not won a medal in CS since 2005.
