Hafu: "We're still looking for a sponsor"

ImageWith patch 2.0 and DHW on the horizon, SK Gaming sat down with Hafu of team orz to talk about their future in BLC.

Team orz, the American team of US Bryan 'Iverson' Chase, US Rumay 'Hafu' Wang and US Patrick 'Megazero' Glinsman, proved itself to be the best team in the scene with their victory at Dreamhack Summer 2011. Yet with the summer stop lulling the competitive BLC scene these past months, the rankings have become uncertain: who will be on top when patch 2.0 hits? SK Gaming sat down with Rumay 'Hafu' Wang to discuss the future of orz, and more, in an interview.

First of all, introduce yourself!

I'm Rumay “Hafu”, I'm twenty years old and go to business school.

How did your pro-gaming career start?

World of Warcraft was my first game and I was awful at it until arenas came out. Then I really realized how awful I was, and I hated it, so I practiced, played and improved with each game. Eventually my team became fairly high rated, enough that sponsors and blogs started to take note.

I didn't know pro-gaming existed until I was approached by a sponsor to attend MLG San Diego back in 2008. Since then, I've attended about a dozen tournaments around the world. Notably, my World of Warcraft team won MLG Orlando and Dallas in 2008, as well as the Blizzard NA Regionals. Recently, I attended Dreamhack Summer 2011 for Bloodline Champions with MegaZero and Iverson and we snagged first place.

Still, I wouldn't call it much of a career, more of a hobby :).

When did you decide to make the switch from WoW to BLC?

I didn't really decide on switching. I weened off WoW as the changes became too irritating and spontaneous to keep up with. While it's a great game, it's not designed to be a competitive game. I was turned onto Bloodline Champions by James 2GD Harding, as he introduced the game to top WoW players with the promise of an all-star tournament with a bit of cash involved. I ended up winning that, with Iverson and Wojo (yeahokbud).

Tell us a bit about how team orz functions as a team: what is your role in the team, who takes the lead, etc?

I feel like I am the best theorycrafter on our team as I originally came up with the composition of Alchemist, Astronomer, Ravener, and I can pick apart why we lose when we do. Iverson is the only DPS on our team, and calls the majority of targets and switches when we're actually playing. MegaZero is relatively quiet with little to say, but he is in my opinion the most well-rounded player on our team. His instant decision making and incredible aim are unmatched.

As a team, we tend to play defensively, but we take advantage of the composition's greatest strength of ridiculous burst. BLC is majorly about individual skill, but top teams are separated from good teams by their coordination.

Team orz won both the Beyond Gaming tournament and Dreamhack Summer, making it the most successful team in the scene. Do you still think you are the team to beat, three months later?

No, I don't. I'm not sure about MegaZero or Iverson, but I haven't been playing in the summer and naturally am a bit rusty. When tournaments are announced and the new patch hits, we'll be back grinding games.

How do you see the team doing in future events, such as Dreamhack Winter?

Well, I'm not sure. We're still looking for a sponsor and it is quite expensive to travel to Sweden. However, if we feel we can definitely have a shot at first place again, we'll pay our way there. My team performs better on LAN than online, partially thanks to the lack of a ping gap.

Why has it proven so difficult for you to get sponsorship, despite your successes?

Stunlock Studios is a small company and the playerbase for BLC is still growing. On top of that, as Dreamhack is in Sweden, it is quite expensive for travel, so I think sponsors are unwilling to invest so much money in a new game. Hopefully they will change that attitude in the future.

Thanks for the interview, any final shoutouts?

Shoutout to Oh Nice, Ni3r0, Valakut, and Doktorplants!
