Upsets and revenge matches marked the beginning of GomTV's WC individual tournament. The first day of Seoul World Invitational was marked by some remarkable events indeed. After the spectacle called World Invitational Team League (won by Team Korea 8-7), the players were getting ready for the solo tournament, which was to bring them some remarkable prizes.
The Ro16 was dappled by some thrilling action. Some games brought opportunities for revenge on the table. Some turned the odds upside down. And some did both.
Chris 'HuK' Loranger 1:2
Jong-Hyun 'Mvp' Jung
Sung-Jun 'July' Park 2:0
Yoon-Yeol 'NaDa' Lee
Cho Won 'San' Kang 2:1
Oleksii 'White-Ra' Krupnyk
Dmytro 'DIMAGA' Filipchuk 2:1
Jae-Duck 'NesTea' Lim
Jung-Hoon 'MarineKing' Lee 2:0
Chia Yang 'SEn' Cheng
Andrew 'mOOn-GLaDe' Pender 1:2
Payam 'TT1' Toghyan
Carl Stefan 'MorroW' Andersson 0:2
Min Chul 'MC' Jang
Jonathan 'Jinro' Walsh 0:2
Jung Hwan 'Anypro' Lee
As you can see, many games did not go according to what many might have hoped. GSL January champion MVP crushed over HuK, proving that he is still an amazing player and he still can win a TvP. His games was followed by the battle of the legends - July vs Nada - in a revenge match that brought an old grudge from the GSL March quarter finals when July beat the Genius Terran 3:2. However, NaDa could not have his way again and lost quickly 0:2, faltering for a second time to July's unique style.
The Ukrainian prides White-ra and Dimaga were next. The Protoss, who showed an unprecedented Warp Prism PvP play against MC in the Team showmatch, was now up against San. Unfortunately, PvP is still the most unpredictable match in SC2 and White-ra was quickly outplayed by the Korean.
Dimaga, however, pulled off the biggest upset in the tournament (and probably the whole year). He brought his own vengeful lust to the table as he already lost to NesTea in the final game of the Team showmatch. Up to this point NesTea had a 100% win rate against ZvZ and was looking stronger than ever. However, as the score was soon tied 1:1, the Korean probably started to question his mirror immortality. Just to make sure that there are little doubts, Dimaga came onto NesTea with a beastly ferocity (and more Roaches) and forced a GG, becoming the first player to defeat the IM Zerg in a mirror. Ever.
The four games of the second day were a bit more one-sided. MarineKing faced SEn yet again after the team battle and this time there was little mercy. Winning the first set with his signature Marine play, MKP surprisingly switched to mech in the second game and proved that he really knows his Terran inside out. SEn went home with a 0-2 loss.
A bit more interesting quarrel was spurred by TT1 and Moonglade. The Australian took the first game on Metalopolis with some nice Roach micro in the late-game, but the Protoss managed to pull together and came back in the following two sets, showing that he is not a player to be taken lightly.
In the final two sets, all Swedish fans had a lot of moments to mourn as Jinro and Morrow met some incredibly tough Protosses, that being Anypro and MC, respectively. The Swedes both lost 0-2 and allowed two more Koreans to move forward to the quarter finals.
Thus ended the Ro16, with some really sweet games and moments to be remembered. And as we leave you with the games you missed (or the one you want to rewatch), let's just look at the picture below and give Dimaga a hearty smile!
