2011 - The Year of the Game Changers?

ImageDuskbin.com's Cynic looks at the teams/players to watch for 2011 in the CS 1.6, SC2 and QL competitive scenes.

Cynic over at duskbin.com has written a three part article entitled "2011 - The Year of the Game Changers?" in which he looks at the three competitive disciplines which will likely dominate 2011's esports scene and picks out key teams/players from each to watch.

Part one looks at Counter-Strike 1.6 in the wake of the shake-up the IEM V European Championship provided.

Describing DK mTw :

"Dangerous! Yes, that’s exactly what mTw are. Absolutely unstoppable when they’re on a roll and a super aggressive team. With ArcadioN taking off the load from Ave’s shoulders in-game, we saw how well it worked out for them. The entire team is always full of energy and this is one of the biggest reasons why they are a constant threat to the top 3 line-up. As beautiful a team as they are to watch, specifically on de_nuke and de_train, they’re equally dangerous and will be responsible for some upsets in 2011."

Part two is about QuakeLive and SK Gaming's own US Shane 'rapha' Hendrixson receives the following writeup:

"After putting in some very consistent performances and winning almost every tournament he took part in, Shane “Rapha” Hendrixson has constantly battled it out with the European duelers and shown why he’s the world #1. In an ESL Classics episode with Carmac, he commentated a recording of his game vs. Cooller. The community was floored when he explained the situations and why he made certain decisions. Being the winner at IEM Dubai, Quakecon as well as IEM Cologne and several other tournaments with top notch competition is not easy. The smartest player in the game and known for his defensive skills, Rapha was on an absolute roll in 2009-2010.

However, towards the end, he conceded a couple of tournaments to K1llsen and Cypher respectively. He has proven himself as a brilliant opponent and has received a lot of acknowledgement from both the community as well as his opponents who’re awestruck by his game sense. After IEM 5, the European duelers seem to be quite motivated and will post a lot of challenges to Rapha’s quest of being and remaining world’s #1 Quake Live player. His games at the World Finals and a possible confrontation with Cooller or Cypher would be on everyone’s mind."

Part three covers StarCraft II, the newcomer to the competitive block, and new GSL champion KR Jong-Hyun 'Mvp' Jung is the first to be scrutinised:

"The South Korean Terran beast Jung “mvp” JongHyun has had a terrific start with two first places - Sony Ericsson GSL 2011 Code S and Gainward SC2 Tournament. His recent victory over Jung-Hoon "MarineKing" Lee in a shockingly one-sided match during the GSL 2011 January Code S tournament Grand Final played at the Jam-Sil Student Gymnasium was just epic. While a lot of supporters were backing Mvp for this match, no one had ever expected it would be such a steamrolling victory. This also makes Mvp the first ever Terran champion in the GSL.

As the next GSL Sponsorship League kicks off on 21st Feb 2011, Mvp would be going in really strong. MarineKing had beaten the Swedish Terran player Jonathan “Jinro” Walsh while Mvp reached the finals by beating his compatriot Zerg player Lim “NesTea“ JaeDuk. The foreigners might be looking strong but they’ve often collapsed in front of the mighty South Korean professionals. Mvp will be a serious challenge for anyone to take up and with his latest victory, it hardly looks like he’s going to slow down any time soon. Mvp is currently ranked #1 on GosuGamer’s rankings."
