The first ever SC2 tournament title for MLG is heading north of the border with Canadian player Huk.A week after the first major SC2 tournament ended with no protoss players in the top eight, MLG threw a spanner in the works with two protoss players in the final. On top of that, both finalists in the American-based tournament were from the cold north known as Canada.
It was Chris 'HuK' Loranger who took the power of Aiur undefeated into the grand final and he would maintain that record after the game too. Having already beaten Jonathan 'KiWiKaKi' Garneau in the upper-bracket final he had a 2-1 advantage thanks to the way MLG scores its matches. In a best-of-seven this meant he had to win two maps before his opponent could win three.
In fact, Huk proved to be slightly more efficient, winning 4-2 with a map to spare. A repeat of the earlier 2-1 scoreline meant that he would be flying home with $2,500 USD for his troubles. The results ran identically to their earlier meeting, with Kiwi managing to take the 1st map again. But Huk quickly shut him out of the series, surely burying the ghosts of his poor performance at last week's IEM.
German player Giacomo 'Socke' Thüs - one of only two European players at the event - managed 3rd place, while Nick 'LastShadow' De Cesare rounded out the top four. The other European competitor, Jeffrey 'SjoW' Brusi, also finished in the money with $500 for his 5th place.
