Cypher has won the QuakeCon 2010 duel tournament along with $14,000Alexei 'Cypher' Yanushevsky has won the QuakeCon 2010 duel tournament, defeating Anton 'Cooller' Singov 3-2 in the grand final. Though the first two maps were heavily one-sided the remaining three provided some of the most entertaining Quake in recent history, while collectively the final proved to be one of the best encounters to date in Quake Live.
Cooller never put a single foot wrong on dm13; he was executing his game so flawlessly that Cypher was struggling to find even shards of armor on his quest to pick up a single frag against the Russian. The first map of the final ended 9-0 in Cooller's favor.
Then came Battleforged and after receiving a taste of his own dominance medicine, Cooller called "gg" with six minutes left. One map apiece.
Neither player was able to implement their prior overwhelming playstyle on t7, shown by the scoreboard showing zero frags after five minutes. Though the majority of the time was spent on up-and-down item control, the two just couldn't decide on where to engage in a battle. Eventually, after seven minutes, Cypher put a kill on the board but Cooller replied instantly, tying the score back up. A battle at mega then ensued, which Cooller crucially won despite being worse off armor and health wise, which was enough to seal the third map for the IEM 4 World Championship runner up.
Aerowalk initally played out like the first two maps: one player (in this case Cypher) controlled the entire arena, hit the most insane rail shots and racked up four frags in a minute. Cooller even cratered, making Cypher's job of maintaining a lead easier.
But Cooller came straight back at Cypher after messing up on a red armor collection, and dished out his own incredible rail shots. The pair were going back and forth, looking for the best opportunities to strike, and it was Cooller that had the advantage in every one of the situations. After being 6--1 down Cooller managed to bring the game back to 6-6. Then winning a brilliant fight at red armor, Cooller made the game his to win, but four minutes passed without any action. Cypher was somehow staying as elusive as ever without the benefit of hardly any health and armor, and managed to drag the map into overtime.
Straight away in the first overtime the same chase game occurred but Cypher still held his ground and wasn't giving Cooller the slightest hint of an opportunity to mount an offense. As the map jumped into the second overtime Cooller killed himself, and immediately after the error Cypher capitalized by stringing together four kills to Cooller's one. Cypher had tied the series up at 2-2 after winning 10-6.
So, as everyone wanted, the game headed into the final map: ztn. The game kicked off with both players spawning right next to each other at lower yellow, an encounter that Cooller got the best of. He then went on to control the majority of the items and added another frag to his score, but Cypher clawed one of his own back and then had the perfect chance to work his way back into the game. Thanks to some monster LG work Cypher tied the kills up at two apiece as the timer began to tick down to 0:00.
With just under a minute remaining the two met for what was seemingly a final battle, and although Cooller put in a ton of damage and dropped Cypher to 9hp, the Serious Gaming star fired off an incredible rail and took the lead 3-2. He was able to hold out the remaining 35 seconds for the win to secure his second QuakeCon title.
For Cooller it may have been a case of what if with Aerowalk, but nonetheless it was like watching the Cooller everyone saw at the IEM 4 World Championships, and a result that he can hold in immensely high regard considering the level Cypher was playing at. Both of the finalists were on top of their game throughout the five map war, excelling with both item control and, best of all for those who watched the final, hitting absurd rail shots.
