Blizzard: "Prot PvP should be about survival"

ImageBlizzard posters took to the forums yesterday to discuss PvP balance again.

There were some interesting discussions on the official forums yesterday discussing the direction of classes in both PvP and PvE. The most pertinent to arena players was the blue posts about protection classes in PvP. "We want the Protection specs to have a place in Arena play," said Ghostcrawler. "But to be frank, it's not our highest priority." He also made it clear that they don't want to push protection specs into a damage-based role in arenas: "we don't want it to rival that of say mages and rogues. A Protection class in PvP should be more about survival and control."

In another post, the Blue spoke about the "arms race" issue in PvP. He explained it succinctly: "a class gains a snare, then another class gains the ability to break snares, so the first class also gains a root." But it was clear that Blizzard isn't happy with that kind of design and Ghostcrawler hinted at some pretty massive changes. "It's likely you'll start seeing a lot of these counter mechanics getting phased out," he said. "Warriors may freak out when they think they will be CC'd permanently, but then they will start to relax when they see everyone is losing those mechanics"

No specific details were given but the kind of changes being hinted at could be pretty far-reaching. The most obvious seems to be rolling back mortal strike effects from priests and mages but there is no official word as yet.
