ImageGroups A and B have concluded in Paris. Cooller and rapha both topped their respective tables undefeated, while noctis and Strenx each had to settle for second place in theirs.

The first day of Quake Live has finished at the ESWC grand finals in Paris, France. Groups A and B put together some intriguing fixtures but the game between Anton 'Cooller' Singov and Kevin 'Strenx' Baeza proved the most entertaining.

SK Gaming's Shane 'rapha' Hendrixson ploughed through both of his opponents, Richard 'noctis' Gansterer and Marcel 'k1llsen' Paul, 2-0. Over the four maps played the American conceded a total of three frags, quickly asserting his presence in the tournament.

With rapha essentially guaranteed to progress to the second round, the clash between k1llsen and noctis would prove crucial for their hopes of advancing. k1llsen picked up the first map but let the following two slip. Facing a win-or-go-home game versus rapha, k1llsen suffered a 2-0 defeat and exited the competition with only one map win to his name.

Group B hosted the match of the day between Cooller and Strenx. The pair were favorites to go through, with Cooller having the edge, but their two-map match was far from comfortable for the Russian. Cooller let a lead slip on dm6 before outsmarting the Frenchman to take the first game, but ztn was the highlight. An initial period of dominant control from Cooller set the tone for a walkover, but Strenx refused to be dictated by Cooller's moves and began making his own plays to find his way back into the game.

Then setting about his own passage of play, Strenx fought hard against Cooller to prevent him from regaining item control which, eventually, saw the game go into overtime. Tied up at 3-3, three overtimes ensued and it took until the third before someone made some frags. Two kills in quick succession went the way of Cooller and he secured top spot in the group.

The remaining four spaces will be filled tomorrow when groups C and D get underway. Find standings, tomorrow's fixtures, and results from today's action on our coverage page. Also, make sure you check out SK Gaming's ESWC gallery, videos and Acer eSports' Twitter page.
