ImageESL will remove WC3 from the German EPS after eight years.

With the closure of NGL One it seems that ESL wants to get in on the "bad news for Warcraft fans" act. After eight years and 16 seasons, they will remove WC3 from the German EPS, starting next season. "The times they are a-changing," said ESL's David Hiltscher on Twitter. "Current is the last season of WC3 in the German ESL Pro Series after 8 years and 16 seasons."

This season's final - to be played on June 13 - will be the last one ever. The list of European WC3 tournaments is rapidly shrinking, with NGL and WC3L both closing their doors. The game still appears healthy in China for the time being, however. With multiple LANs still on the horizon and very few professionals switching to SC2, WC3 still looks strong overseas.

German website Fragster has compiled a handy list of all the previous EPS winners. Of course, one name crops up more than any other in the list, and that is the former SK legend, Daniel 'miou' Holthuis. The human player won six seasons back-to-back. He met Minh 'Spell' Nguyen in four of those games, which are some of the best remembered EPS finals of all time.

Fittingly, for a tournament with such a strong history of human dominance, it was Marc 'yAwS' Förster who won last season. He looks in good shape to make it nine from 16 for the human race, as he is currently sitting in second place. With four players qualifying for the finals and only a few games left, a repeat of last season is definitely on the cards.

Warcraft III was tied with Counter-Strike as the longest running EPS game until now. CS, however, will continue its run while WC3 will join FIFA on memory lane. EA's football sim will also be dropped with the start of the new season.
