Evil Geniuses earned $2,000 for their win in the first edition of the WES Masters Cup.The North American-based team have been bootcamping at the ESC Icybox in Teltow, Germany, and made the decision to compete in the online cup against some of Europe's top upcoming teams.
faced only two problems in their group: the first being a close match against PlayZone se where they won 16-14 and the second being their only groupstage loss to cbteam, but otherwise the team comfortably shifted over to the second day of action.
After easing past EGIPTYANE 2-0, the recently recruited team into H2k Gaming were next up for the EM4 participants.
Semi-final
2-1 H2k Gaming (de_tuscan - 19:17, de_dust2 - 10:16, de_inferno 16:14)
Jordan 'n0thing' Gilbert was giving off nothing but headshots throughout the first map but it wasn't enough to prevent them drawing up and heading into overtime. Team EG then came out on top of the overtime, and headed into the second map knowing that a win would take them to the final.
But the young Swedish team came straight back at the EM4 Edmonton champions on de_dust2, taking the first half 10-5 and wrapping up the map with a 6-5 second half, headed by Richard 'Xizt' Landström who was having a brilliant map.
The deciding map, de_inferno was exceptionally close, and after going down 6-9 at half time Evil Geniuses hit the required 10 rounds to advance to the final and face their group stage rivals cbteam.
After the match H2k Gaming filed a match protest due to "Tyler 'Storm' Wood of EG forgetting to press tab while taking smoke screenshots", according to HLTV.org, which was subsequently dismissed. H2k Gaming have apparently been banned from all future WES Masters Cups for the dispute, and forfeited their third place playoff game to PlayZone se.
Grand final
2-0 cbteam (de_nuke - 16:6, de_inferno - 16:6)
Unlike the group stage encounter, Evil Geniuses didn't hold back with $2,000 on the line, and rolled through the Norwegians 16-6 on both de_nuke and de_inferno. Danny 'fRoD' Montaner was in stunning form over both maps, reminding everyone why he's so feared with both the rifle and AWP.
Tomi 'lurppis' Kovanen gave his thoughts on the cup to WESgg.com, which he really enjoyed. "I think it was a really good event, I'm really happy how the admins handled our situation vs H2k and we'll definitely compete again if given a chance while we're in Europe," he said. "We had a couple of good matches against different teams and it was nice to play close games vs good teams before IEM finals."
Despite Frag eXecutors pulling out of the tournament, the first WES Masters Cup served well as an appetiser for the EM4 World Finals. Team EG will be more than happy with their victory on European soil, something they desperately needed having seen their ridiculous EM4 group welcome the current WCG champions.
Final Standings
1st: - $2,000
2nd: cbteam - $1,000
3rd: PlayZone se - $500
4th: H2k Gaming
5th / 6th: EGIPTYANE / PiNG
