The previous version of DotA featured new content almost exclusively, bringing forth more diversity to the mod. Unfortunately, the latest version was considered rather unbalanced, with the new heroes having beginner's luck in successive matches. Also, some essential hero and cosmetic changes were applied, causing somewhat of a discomfort for some veteran players who immediately would take notice to minute fixes.

The new version seems to focus the majority of its changes to balancing the heroes and items; a feature of v6.65 that was criticized. Many heroes have had their cooldown times adjusted; for the most part, they have been improved. For example, all of the Invoker's special spellbook abilities have undergone timing adjustments, the general formula being that the spells are stronger while the cooldowns have increased. Meanwhile, other heroes, (such as the Doom Bringer), have undergone makeovers with all their spells to balance out.

Several items have undergone significant changes, as well. The difficult to acquire Divine Rapier now cannot be destroyed while on the ground and once it is picked up by another player, it becomes a permanent addition to their inventory. The Scroll of Town Portal, on the other hand, now has a function where if it is double-clicked, it will automatically target the team's Well of Life. The Phase Boots, (possibly the most popular item in the game), now has decreased duration but instead offers 12% speed increase and cools down faster.

Aside from the player's experience, gameplay cosmetics and visuals have been adjusted and may be found on the changelog.
