An Xbox 360 froze up at the worst possible time: in the dying seconds of a live broadcasted tournament match. At Major League Gaming's Orlando national championship this weekend one of the most controversial events in their history occurred. Professional Halo 3 team Triggers Down were inches away from advancing to the upper bracket final and a minimum payout of $40,000 only for an Xbox 360 to freeze up causing the game to end.
Triggers Down were leading the match series 2-1 and required one more win to advance to the upper bracket final.
Playing Onslaught capture the flag, it was a close contest throughout and after a 15 minute battle the game went into overtime. With the score tied at 3-3 Triggers Down player Heinz grabbed the enemy team's flag, made it all the way back to his home flag uncontested and just about to score to win the game, only to find he was unable to put it in.
Looking across confused to his team-mates and league officials, they realised the hosting Xbox 360 had seized up and the game automatically ended.
The incident was captured on video and can be viewed here.
Major League Gaming rules state that if any equipment malfunctions during a game the match must be restarted and replayed.
Triggers Down were unable to overcome their opponents, Classic, in the rematch and were eventually knocked into the lower bracket as a direct result of the faulty Xbox 360 console. They then lost for a second time and were eliminated after being touted by many as favourites to win the competition.
An unfortunate event then for Halo 3's most consistent team; they hadn't placed out of the top two in 2009 and were undefeated since August.

And the outcome of the match was somehow clear if Heinz had the chance to capture.
But rules are rules, it's just sad that a team had to suffer and loose a lot of money because MLG is unable to check for their equipment status, if players already told them before that something is wrong.
Just imagine the soccer world cup final 4 years ago and the french keeper would have told the referee the goal is looking like it's going to collapse any time soon, then they loose 2-1 in the 90" minute, the goal collapses and they decide to play the game from the start again.
But yeah. Xbox360 is old.
He was RIGHT THERE, but it's stated in the rules.
Think back to the 2005 CPL tournament, what if the server crashed during Spawn's amazing ninja defuse? He "almost" had it but he was getting shot at and, in Halo your getting shot at 80% of the time, and about 99% of the time when your the flag carrier lol.
Besides TD, Str8 and Carbon had a really crappy start in the tournament....shit happens I guess..
Extremely unlucky, but that's life.
Pretty sad...
Unlucky I guess
I didn't see the match, but if he was so close to capture that flag, I would have let them win. It is when things like this happen that we realize how shitty a rule can be.
