Blizzard "not sure [arena] was the right thing"

Warcry.com has released an in-depth interview with one of the main men behind World of Warcraft, Rob Pardo. The former Everquest player spoke at length about the five years of WoW's history.

Although the interview is mostly PvE or game development based, the one PvP answer (there were no questions about PvP) was probably the most interesting. When asked about the game's biggest mistake, Pardo answered with "we really never designed WoW to be a competitive e-sports game."

Referring to the constant battle between PvE and PvP balance, he said "WoW has a bit of a schizophrenic philosophy behind it." Pardo did make sure to tell readers that arenas weren't going away but admitted that he almost wished they'd never started:

"If I could go back in time before we shipped WoW, I would have either made serious changes to basic class balance to facilitate that type of play, or if I went back to when we had the idea two years later, I would have said, "Maybe we shouldn't go there.""

This interview comes at a very inopportune time after probably the most entertaining arena tournament MLG has ever run. However, with Blizzard now committed to that aspect of the game and Tom Chilton recently claiming that 25% of WoW players dabble in arenas (Source), perhaps this was just a glimpse into some internal conflict between PvE and PvP designers at Blizzard.
