You should be happy with a 5-8th place, especially if you didn't get enough preparation. The problem with trackmania is that most race drivers in general don't like how the car operates compared to most other racing games, and it is also pretty hard to get into, and is very challenging for newbies, which makes it not as attractive for casual players. So the player base is maybe not as large as other e-sports games. It is however very fair and balanced and it is very suitable for an e-sports game, compared to maybe WoW or even WC3 where races make difference as well. But that doesn't really matter since it's all about the sponsorship money. :(
