China says no to WoW again

By Michael 'Zechs' Radford

ImageThe Chinese government has once again disallowed the availability of World of Warcraft.

Not many people manage to permanently quit World of Warcraft but it looks like the whole of China will do it in one go. Reuters is reporting that the government has told Activision/Blizzard that their game is not welcome on Chinese servers.

The game's Chinse distributor, NetEase, has been fighting a long battle to get the game released since as long ago as the Burning Crusade release. Various reasons were given, including the fact that undead imagery is illegal in China. But amidst a clampdown on "undesirable activity," the government has come straight out and said that WoW falls under that header.

But the government went even further than that. From the Reuters post:

"The regulatory body posted a statement on its Web site that demanded the NetEase affiliate company that operates World of Warcraft to suspend charging users to play the game, and disallow new account registrations."

The chances of Chinese players ever getting to see WoTLK are slimmer than ever before. With China looking for every reason to stop people playing online games, WoW's future there looks very dim.
