Ex-Virtus.Pro member Aleksey "HEL1" Novikov helped tp.usports to a victory at the Russian WCG qualifier over his old organization. After being one map down tp.usports rallied to take the top spot.tp.uSports have won the Russian WCG qualifier, upsetting favourites Virtus.Pro along the way. It was not a straight upset though as in the final Virtus.pro took the first map, inferno, 16-12 to take the lead. tp.usports then took train 16-12 and dust2 16-10 to win the qualifier and take the spot in Chengdu.
Virtus.pro can still attend out of the second spot but it will mean incurring licence costs as was the case with the Finnish qualifier.
tp.usports may seem like a new name to many outside of Russia, but one name on their roster immediately jumps out and that is of Aleksey 'HEL1' Novikov who was a member of the Virtus.pro lineups in 2006 and then played for forZe, the second best Russian team, in 2007 and 2008. After those years of playing with forZe, who were nearly always comprised of ex-Virtus.Pro players, HEL1 decided to try his luck with a newer team of Russian players in the form of tp.usports, joining them earlier in 2009.
WCG Russia placings:
1st tp.uSports $6,000 + WCG spot
2nd Virtus.Pro $4,500 + WCG spot (if they pay the additional costs)
3rd forZe $3,500
4th EYESports $2,000
tp.usports lineup:
Aleksey 'HEL1' Novikov
Mihail 'Dosia' Stolyarov
Alexey 'OverDrive' Birukov
Sergey 'Fox' Stolyarov
Ruslan 'Dober' Shariffylin
