5 Things You Can Do To Make Your Guild Better

ImageStuck for things to do with your guild? Take a look at this little list to see a few novel ways about how you can improve your organisation.

Heya folks. My name's Scott Constantine and I'm a new writer here on SK Gaming. This site has provided a formidable quality of e-sports news and features in the past and I bring new, original articles to the fray. Hopefully you guys will enjoy what I do. There'll be focus on World of Warcraft although some features will be applicable to MMOs in general, like this handy list recommending how you guild leaders can do some nifty little things to improve their organisation.

1. Clean Up Your Website

A good website can serve as a powerful recruitment tool, so long as you get people to look at it by plugging the URL enough. However, an ugly Geocities template just won't cut it in this Web 2.0 world. If your website or forum has fallen into disrepair or simply is never updated, then either encourage activity on it from within your guild or consider taking it down altogether. The aesthetics of a site alone can make or break a potential recruit's decision to apply. Consider that if they see a neglected webpage then they may believe that members of the guild are equally neglected - giving them and others an inaccurate impression of what you're really about. I know some of the greatest progress guilds barely have the time to update their site, so consider taking it down if its not being used.

2. Stop Supplicating, Start Leading

What's that? Your elemental shaman needs a few mana potions for the upcoming raid? A newbie needs you to run through Deadmines with him? Stop chasing after the individual desires of your members and remember the big picture. If your members had signed up to be waited on by you every day then they're obviously in the guild for the wrong reasons. Attempting to satisfy the small requirements of your members is difficult and will become impossible as you recruit more. Make the fact that members are expected to be independent in most of their endeavors clear early on and stop believing that pleasing their every little whim will make them respect you more - it won't. Be bold and concentrate on forming alliances with other guilds or starting up your next raid. In the end, your members will love you more for making progress this way.

3. Send Guys Gifts

Obeying the every desire of your recruits can lead to negative consequences. Conversely, rewarding good behaviour when the occasion calls for it reinforces positive attitudes between members. Gifts have been a sign of appreciation since ancient times, so what better way to give members a nice, warm feeling whenever they help out the guild? Its also a fine way to test who is really loyal to you - as quite a few recipients may go ahead and put gold straight back into the communal bank account.

4. Time Manage

The leader who tries to do everything at once is the bloke who gets nothing done. Spending five minutes planning what you're going to do with your day will make everything run smoother and more efficiently. It stops you from sporadically jumping between jobs randomly and allows you to maintain focus throughout your gaming session. Remember that you have officers to help you out and let them split tasks between themselves. They should appreciate being given such responsibility and it demonstrates that you're willing to trust them. When this power is distributed evenly, it will mean you don't have to micromanage every little aspect of your guild so you can concentrate on bigger things.

5. Stay Positive

Having a high level of internal happiness allows you to lead more effectively. Its likely you already have a naturally optimistic attitude, but just remember to keep it up even when your raid is wiping for the seventh time on the same boss. This probably came easily during the first few weeks after establishing the guild, but the honeymoon period doesn't last forever. Unless you're making steady progress every single day, then there's going to be times where the future looks dim. Overcome this by drinking coffee and listening to inspirational music. Plough on through any rough patches your organisation may be going through and keep your chin held high. Doing so will cause members to take after your lead and create a great working atmosphere for all.
