Quest to Learn curriculum in New York City

ImageThe Institute of play in NYC opens a curriculum by the name of "Quest to Learn", engineered to teach students how to resolve real life problems, daily and military, by learning through games.

In this course, different type of games will be used, from the most basic card game to the advanced Civilization PC game, children are encouraged to love to be taught about strategies, problem solving, and other daily life problems.

The students will learn how to create a game and how to solve one as well as play already successful games in order to understand the knowledge of the game creation and how to take a strategic approach to one.

"This is design-based pedagogy,” said Katie Salen who conceived the program to metropolismag. “From day one, kids should imagine themselves as designers of their own learning.” Metropolismag also claims that is a forward-thinking way of teaching, and believes that playing games is an encouraging new way for students to learn without thinking of it as a chore: "While exploring how Spartans dealt with rival city-states, for instance, students will learn how to make policy decisions and weigh the costs of war."

In February, the European parliament claimed “Video games can stimulate learning of facts and skills such as strategic thinking, creativity, cooperation, and innovative thinking" and may think to use some aspect of this concept for future schools if proven successful.

"Quest to Learn" or "Q2L" will only accept 6th graders this year, however, if successful a new year will be added every following year in order to accept more students of different ages. Below you can find an idea of what to expect in this game curriculum.
