SK misses out on playoffs despite better record

ImageSK finished fourth in the round robin at MLG Dallas but miss out on the four-team bracket due to MLG's tie-break rules.

Separating tied teams after a group stage is one of the toughest rule decisions that tournament organisers have to make. Most leagues take either the round/score difference between the teams into account or play a series of tie-breaker matches. MLG's rules, however, read like this:

"3. Match results will be recorded and the Top 4 Teams, determined by total Match wins, will advance to the Championship Bracket. Ties will be broken using Head to Head record."

Thanks to that system, SK Gaming USA misses out on the bracket play in Dallas, despite sitting in fourth place on the table according to both SK-Gaming and Gotfrag. As you can see here SK finished with a -3 round difference, ahead of compLexity Red with -5. However, since Complexity won their game against SK they will take the fourth spot in knockout play.

MLG's commentator, IGoaf explained things simply. "Both Fnatic and coL beat SK," he told SK-Gaming. "The reason for playing the full 5 [rounds] is because if it was full circle when tied for that 4th place slot then the rounds would come into play."

The full list of qualified teams looks like this:

- x6tence
- compLexity Red
- eMazing Gaming
- fnatic wow

The Spaniards of x6 are looking strong as they topped the table via round difference. But the so-called 'beast cleave' of eMg is also looking impressive with an identical 5-2 win record. They just defeated Fnatic in the first round and will now face either x6 or Complexity, the only RMP left in the tournament.
