WC3L XIV: 24 teams, best-of-2 and no LAN Finals

By Lawrence Benedict 'Malystryx' Phillips

ImageWC3L gets a major overhaul with the new season holding twice as many teams, but the prize purse once again is reduced this time to 3,000 euros and no LAN finals are planned.

The season will welcome all twelve teams from the previous season, as well as twelve new teams who are selected by the WC3L, instead of the customary qualification tournament for new aspiring WC3L teams.

The twenty-four teams will be divided into four groups of six teams, with the 1st place of each group then progressing to an 8-team playoff tree, while the second and third will battle it out for the other spot. The tournament will be played only online, rather than culminate in a LAN finals like we have seen over the last few years.

The new match system's major change is that matches are now best-of-2 not best-of-3, with two 1on1 matches, a 2on2 match and an "ace match".

The Ace match is essentially a bonus match, it is best-of-1, and teams can choose a player to play in it that did not compete in the rest of the clan war. Clan war victory is therefore now based on map wins with a total of seven points up for grabs. ESL has made no announcement on the map pool which could have an influence on how well the league performs.
