Due to the fan and media speculation circulating about how the beta seems to be delayed to an uncertain extent, Blizzard has shed light on the subject and confirmed that the game will be seeing a first-half 2010 release. To the discontent of many, Blizzard's very own PR, Cydra has revealed that the development team for the RTS sequel have dictated that they will be unable to bring the game to store shelves, at least for 2009. According to Cydra, the primary reason behind this delay is the difficulty with reformatting Battle.net for Battle.net 2.0 for the upcoming StarCraft II domain.
In a press release by Cydra:
Recently, the dev team revealed that they have been undergoing some difficulty with balancing the zerg out with the other two races, as the zerg function much differently from both the other two races and its 1997 predecessor.
StarCraft II is one of two delayed high-budget Activision Blizzard releases, along with Singularity by Raven Software.

StarCraft II Battle.net Update
In a press release by Cydra:
"Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.
Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010.
We will share more details about the beta, Battle.net, and StarCraft II’s launch in the future. Keep an eye on the official website at www.starcraft2.com for updates, and as always, thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support for StarCraft II and all of Blizzard Entertainment’s games.
Best,
Blizzard PR"

NOT
'Cause that's _too_ naive. Even if they take their sweet time, the chance is there for it to still be somewhat bugged. However, I get your point. Just saying, some customer reports could help them a lot on their way.
Gief beta asap. Hope for the best, and we'll see. : ]
so sad..
Pretty boring to wait until 2010 anyways when betas already been played etc
i have time to play in this year, there will be long winter nights to play long hours of battles. in next year i must finish my master so not that much time for gaming :|
damn you blizzard.
but why am i wondering? its blizzard. it was from beginning to sweet to be true ;-)
the same thing now. it's not activision its blizzard. they like to stretch the time for their games to come out ;-)
I am happy at the same time, because this just means they're putting more work into it, making the game nearly flawless. I just ask for 1 thing, since we're waiting so long for this game to come out...Can we please just get a public demo for people to play, most of us didn't get a beta key, and a lot of us want to "try" the game a little.
They really failed with that on WoW
