Return of the Failure – WWFOG (WTFOMG)
John "eSports" Doe returns for his second contribution. This time discussing the new league WWFOG and why its doomed for failure.
In particular in the professional gaming scene, so I thought it would be a good share and discussion topic here on SK Gaming, just like my last article.
I was greeted, by a nice piece of spam, by @Slasher aka Rod Breslau which made me even more interested in who is behind that whole mysterious thing and what is up with it. Fortunately one thing upfront it’s not Scott Insolvencya. Thanks god the new CPL is not touching G7 territory and had the bright idea to found “THE WORLD WIDE FEDERATION OF GAMING!” In a galaxy far far away....
No seriously, let us get back on topic. World Wide Federation of Gaming just sounds brilliant, don't you think so? Me neither and I am also going to tell you why.
For people that have been around the esports scene a bit longer, this idea sounds very familiar, some may call it the big American fail, others the black hole of sponsorship money, but in the end it was just three letters that tried to change professional gaming / eSports and failed epically, CGS – Championship Gaming Series.
That that didn’t work out well either is also well known.
But WWFOG (WTFOMG), who came up with that name anyway, thought about another approach of the whole thing. Instead of having Sponsors and TV Stations paying teams they had this brilliant idea to let you and me, the gaming community, pay in addition to possible Sponsorships and advertising contracts they "might" get by you guys signing up.
I think it is a great pleasure for every gamer to spend his hard earned money on "access to the forums", or the "chance" of being drafted by a pro team. If you see the odds, to get somewhere “as part of the community” is more than questionable, the WWFOG needs to make a profit so they will not let you make any business decisions and even if they have 24 Pro Teams with 10 players each, the chance to be part of that is going near zero as a casual gamer.
If the project doesn’t attract enough people, it is going down with your money in their pockets pretty fast. How much of a chance do most people really stand against a competition of 50 – 100k gamers who are interested and involved in semi-professional gaming?
Let us summarize all this. This is really the perfect example of how you should not take care of your customers; do these guys really think gamers are that stupid?
Someone really is trying to drain money from esports' pocket, and after I had a good laugh where the company is established it all made sense. Viva Las Vegas! There is really nothing more to say than that you should be very cautious about this project. Though you should visit their websiteand make your own mind up. Anyway the really interesting thing with WWFOG is, and I’d really like to see your answers and opinions on this, which eSports Tournament/League related project that came out of the states is still alive, really doing something for the scene and also trustworthy?
John "eSports" Doe's personal list:
So the question here really is what’s wrong? Why can’t American eSport entrepreneurs be as successful as European or Asians and do you think WWFOG will be any different and why? Feel free to discuss.

When I opened my outlook today, there was a press release that grabbed my attention, not because it wasn’t the usual marketing bullshit I’m reading on a day to day basis, but because it promised a big change in the gaming industry.
""The Worldwide Federation of Gaming is a new way to game. Anyone can join for the opportunity to play with our community that is built for gamers and backed by gamers. Being a member means you will have the chance to learn from the pros and potentially be drafted by one of our professional teams for league play. Check out the gamers’ grid to vote on what cities you think will be home to the pro gaming teams! Welcome to your community, welcome to WWFOG.""
For people that have been around the esports scene a bit longer, this idea sounds very familiar, some may call it the big American fail, others the black hole of sponsorship money, but in the end it was just three letters that tried to change professional gaming / eSports and failed epically, CGS – Championship Gaming Series.
"But what have they done until now to get your trust and money, or even a glimpse of return of their promise? Nothing."
I guess “Learn from the pros” is just a term for saying “We take Visa, MasterCard and American Express for you to train half an hour with a professional of your choice, cash upfront no refunds” which would be the equivalent to ESEA.
"“Gamers and gaming supporters can sign up for membership with WWFOG for $10 per year. Membership will provide gamers with input privileges on how the organization is formed via access to the forums. It will also provide gamers with a chance to participate in the draft for the professional teams that will be formed as well as access to the community with professional gamers that are already backing the organization”"

"“We will also launch a gaming commerce site later this year so that you can shop in one place and talk with other gamers about what the best gear, apparel or energy drink may be for your gameplay needs.”"
Let us summarize all this. This is really the perfect example of how you should not take care of your customers; do these guys really think gamers are that stupid?
"If the project doesn’t attract enough people, it is going down with your money in their pockets pretty fast"
So you can sign up right now at the WWFOG for $10 a year, they promise tournaments, they promise competitions, they promise they have over 200 pro gamers, but actually just listed a few b-list names in their press release. They also want you to pay for the project in addition to other ways of grabbing your money like the “gaming commerce site”. But what have they done until now to get your trust and money, or even a glimpse of return of their promise? Nothing.Someone really is trying to drain money from esports' pocket, and after I had a good laugh where the company is established it all made sense. Viva Las Vegas! John "eSports" Doe's personal list:
"CGS – FAIL – Website belongs to the Black Fatherhood Magazine now
CPL – FAIL – Expanding to Middle East with new/old management
WSVG – FAIL – Scott Valencia owning the new CPL now
CyberXGames - FAIL
WWFOG – FAIL Pending
4/5 FAIL = 80 Percent FAIL rate
European / Asian equivalent
WCG – Running fine and steady for years
KODE5 – Running fine
ESL – Running fine
NGL – Running ok
Asus Winter Cup - Running fine and steady for years
Dreamhack - Running fine and steady for years
ESWC – Fail
1 / 7 FAIL = 14% FAIL rate"

So the question here really is what’s wrong? Why can’t American eSport entrepreneurs be as successful as European or Asians and do you think WWFOG will be any different and why? Feel free to discuss.

I don't have a problem with a ridiculously lopsided, unfair, and biased article because it's SK's site and they are free to post whatever they want. If you're going to slam someone cowboy the fuck up and put your reputation on the line for it.
Slasher, djwheat, SirScoots, and myself have all bashed this concept ... I don't see the need for hiding.
Next desperate claim please.
Who's desperate ? LOL at the e-drama stupid wannabe.
Rigged voting and oh noes you would have made a difference :o
?
Keep up the good work Rod.
And when we read the article, we find a related note, this "by a nice piece of spam" not to mention his Facebook status update "is waiting for good news from America ;-)", which was updated just after this article was released. He claims he is not this John Doe, but unfortunately all the links seem to point to him now except the writing style.
Maybe SK should reveal the guy behind John Doe tomorrow before this goes over the limits. :P
ps: sk will not reveal it as it forwards traffic and attention to the site
Since when was KODE5 purely European/Asian? o.O
Since when did MLG, CEVO, and ESEA not exist? o.O
Since when was CPL purely American?
You're looking way too much into the pure business "founders" of these events, and failing to recognize that most of these events have had tournaments and competitions around the globe.
As has been said a million times before in the thread, man up and take credit for your work, or don't put it out there at all.
Really? REALLY?
-_-;; /sigh
Also, Zechs, you're honestly acting like my roommate's girlfriend was acting when she wanted him to open his birthday gift a day early. "Noooo, no it's not that... guess what it is! Okay don't guess... wait... please guess! :P"
If you're going to post something as anonymous content, post it as anonymous and stand by it, don't flirt with the readers in some kind of fruity guessing game.
As far as the WWFOG, I guess I understand the comparisons that people draw saying this is like the CGS in some senses, but the biggest issue the CGS ever had was that it was more of a television show than it was a league. They cared more about showing some opie kid from GrassChew Tennessee and have him tell his story about how "Me an Pa were just drivin' to the feed store when the CGS drafted me and now I make money playin' the Forza Motorsport!" instead of showing that these people were dedicated players who spend most of their week practicing and playing.
As far as I've heard, WWFOG is just some guys wacky idea of some kind of super league, not a new Nickelodeon TV show.
I don't really get why everyone keeps saying WWFOG is a FAIL or the guy is EPIC FAIL. What has he failed at? He hasn't done anything yet. Did he fail at making a press release? People give this entire subject so much credence and attention before literally ANYTHING has happened. How about we wait and let the guy show more of his hand before we start doing anonymous exposes on his concept. As of right now, everyone is speculating and I would go as far as to say you're giving the guy way more credit than he, or his WWFOG concept, really deserve.
It's like watching people speculate on the island in LOST in the second season. It's mind bending.
People are more concerned with getting their opinions out early enough to be able to claim "I told you so!" then they are in actually making a project succeed. That's a damn fact.
Why not wait with the accusing until you're, like, SURE sure? ;-P
will take some time to check all those 1,985 followers Slasher has :D social media enthusiast
I know many people named John, and Doe is a female deer, which seems like a normal name too, just like many Germans and Americans like to keep animal surnames like 'Wolff' etc.
Thanks for the comment section reality-show drama John! This is entertaining! Please keep on bashing guys! :)
... oh and btw! Quite a few columns out there, in printed as well as online press, are written under pseudonym.
MLG = WoW, pretty hard not to be somewhat successful with that.
How about you try to refute the arguments, not the site or the author?
I don't really care.
I'm medicated right now.
That's all I got.
