SK-Gaming US defeated eMg for the third time this weekend to be crowned champions of MLG Columbus.eMazing Gaming has been the bane of RMP at MLG this weekend, putting pay to the likes of Ensidia and Team EG. But SK Gaming USA had their number, and the third and final victory proved conclusive as SK picks up $9,000 for first place.
The grand final started with back-to-back Dalran Sewers and the teams traded wins. eMg switched things up by respeccing their deathknight to frost. They rolled the dice on map three; despite being given the chance to switch their 50/50 deathknight spec, they stuck with it and took the third map on Ruins of Lordaeron.
But that was as close as eMg got. SK needed just two maps, and they took them back-to-back on Dalaran and Nagrand. Dalaran was a painstakingly close game and had fans of both teams biting their nails. But the last map ended in quite ironic style. After all the complaints directed at eMg for training a single target all game long, it was actually SK's RMP that blew up the deathknight. The game was over in the blink of an eye, as one improved counterspell was enough time for Joe 'Enforcer' Morrone and Mark 'Pookz' Rendon to destroy eMg's deathknight.
The tournament as a whole could barely have gone better for Ryan 'Realz' Masterson and his team. After a shaky but successful start on Friday night, they lost just one game on their way to the final - a narrow 3-2 victory for compLexity Red.
Where other teams faltered against the so-called "cheesey" comp of eMg, SK seemed to have the perfect counter all weekend long. Enforcer's super aggressive playstyle made it hard for his opponents to react in time and put eMg on the back foot - something that other teams had been unable to do.
Final Standings
1. SK Gaming USA - $9,000 USD
2. eMazing Gaming - $4,500 USD
3. Ensidia - $2,250 USD
4. compLexity Red
