Blizzard admits season five errors

ImageIn a flurry of posts on the PvP section, Blizzard forum posters admitted that mistakes were made in season five.

Season five has been one of the most talked about in WoW history but not usually in a good way. Today, Blizzard's basic message was "yes, we screwed some things up, but we're still learning."

Coming as little surprise to most players, one of the top issues was burst damage when WOTLK first shipped. However, Blizzard were careful to defend the idea that burst does have its place, saying "being able to call upon your burst when needed (blowing cooldowns etc.) is pretty important for being able to finish someone off..." In their own defence, the blue post also added that "We [Blizzard] think this was a bigger problem when season 5 started than it is now."

Next in the firing line was gear. Many players have complained about PvE gear in arenas for a long time, but Ghostcrawler was quick to point out that things were the other way round in Burning Crusade: "A lot of players gave up raiding to do Arenas because the gear was readily attainable." In another post, however, he admitted that the situation in early season five was no better, with Naxx being "too easy to PUG". He also pointed out that this will not be the case in season six, saying "I don't think you will find the same number of players rocking Yogg hard mode weapons."

Class balance also came up in the guise of paladins and deathknights. Here, the blue poster was blunt, saying simply "We think DKs and Holy paladins are too dominant in Arenas." Both of those classes are being nerfed in the upcoming 3.1 patch.

At the opposite end of the scale from burst damage, Ghostcrawler had this to say on survivability and resilience:
1. For the last few seasons, their resilience had pretty much just gone up. Season 5 was a reset that had a lot more in common with Season 1.
2. In addition, this was complicated by the issue above -- that players were combining the weak resilience with very potent PvE weapons that they had already looted from KT. If the Arena season had started around the same time Naxx had opened (combined with slightly better tuning on Naxx) then there would not have been such a discrepancy.
3. Some classes had overly powerful built in resistances that made up for the lack of resilience. Specifically, DKs had a lot of cooldowns and passive defenses built in for tanking and paladins had their shields, which could be used offensively at the start of the season.

But things will change, according to the same post: "I think what we might do differently next time is make higher resilience values available earlier."
