Quake Live has boomed since its launch yesterday evening. With this a lot of users are having trouble and want questions answered. iD staff and Quakenet operators took a little time to answer some frequently asked questions.iD and Quakenet were both happily suprised at the "overload" of people wanting to play Quake Live which may have caused some problems for players to connect last night and even today.
In order to help everyone, they held a little Q & A on mIRC last night with some frequently asked questions. The questions were answered by iD staff, Quakenet operators and trusted beta testers.
I got my validation code but still have to wait in queue?
Yes unfortunately if are have been placed in the queue you must wait until you can access the site. We are currently experiencing a large amount of traffic and must manage the large number of players attempting to create and register accounts.
Is there Opera Support?
Currently there is not Opera support. Additional support is under development. Currently we support IE6, IE7, FF2 and FF3.
I'm currently 24904 in line but I also want to go to bed badly, what should I do?
Honestly? I'd go to bed, it'll probably be better in the morning

There is currently no ups speedometer. A large list of cvars is currently posted in the Getting Started forum

Does quake live use opengl ?
Indeed it does.
Can we make private game with friends only, with lockable server ?
There may be competition servers in the future, as for private servers, there has been some talks about it so it is a possibility for the future.
Can Q3 players play against QuakeLive players?
No, the protocols are not compatible. All quake3 players are welcome into QuakeLive though.
Will CPM be added to QL?
I would really highly doubt it. Even if Quake Live eventually somehow supports mods, arqon is working on PMX.
Is the new quake beta windows only ?
Quake Live currently only supports Windows XP and Windows Vista, however additional support is currently under development.
Can i practice offline?
Yes you can play against bots offline

There is a chat/friend system
Is maxfps to be set on "125" like quake3 for maximal speed and jumps?
You currently can not set fps higher than 125 and that is a good number to leave it at. Physics are no longer dependant on your fps setting however. LCD players with 75hz may think maxfps 75 is smoother.

It has all of the Quake 3 maps that were made by id including some brand new ones!
How large is the download for QuakeLive?
About 300MB
Are there any features added in open beta that were not in closed beta?
Awards is the most noticable new feature, looks like there's been a lot of little things though.
Why is it possible to make the game playable from browser yet maintain its quality? is this a gaming first?
Yes, you will be very happy with the game once you get to try it out

"Yes you can play against bots offline"
Actually you cant practise offline. You can play against bots, but not offline. :)
Thanks for the FAQ Elke! o/
However, I would like the last question to be answered properly. I can't figure out how they managed to make a game like QuakeLive run on a browser. Beats the hell out of my brain whenever I think about it.
Only problem atm (which they stated they are fixing as of now), is the stats reporting. Your stats wont be recorded from the matches you play, but it should probably be up again and running shortly.
I do however dislike their rating system. It should be more like WoW (I don't like WoW as a game, but the arena rating system is good). The current one in QL is bad and gets you stuck with players to good.
